No point, it's just a stupid piece of paper which often means you've got to share your stuff if you split up! Waste of time and I've no intention of ever doing it! (My OH would be greatly relieved if he was a member of BE and reading this!)

In Australia if you live with your defacto they may be entitled to share your stuff if you split up too. This doesn't just apply to married couples

I suspect you could if you saw a solicitor.

People seem a lot more *savvy* about this over here in terms of what they could lose if they live with their partners.

Ack no, that sounds bad, I own property here in the UK, my OH doesn't. When we finally get to Oz we'll be on an even keel and he isn't the type. He's already been through a pretty bad marriage (GRR) and is now divorced and the divorce was very amicable and neither ripped the proverbial out of things.

Hmmm true , seems natural to consider what you might lose, if you don't trust your partner. And let's face it what have you got if you haven't got trust?

Just for the record, we're in a very trusting relationship and have been through a lot together. We'd not sh*t on each other from a great height, like he has already had done to him by his ex-wife. I'm not going into detail but she has scarred him... I'd give that bloke my last piece of toast, if I really had to, but I know he'd not expect me to, as he knows I love my toast! All joking aside, I get where you're coming from Builder...

B*GGER, I've just put myself in the notion for some toast *wanders off to stick two slices in* and no, I'm not some sort of toast freak, I limit myself to two slices of bread a day....ahem

Agree. The point is whether you live with someone or are married to them the legal commitment is the same. So it's all about preference rather than what's yours and what's mine - it's the same really in legal terms.

No right, no wrong. It's what each couple / person prefers
