Re: The Sensible Australian Election Thread
Well, you left it to me...
I did start of with this bit: "Approved dwellings fell 3.3% in June 2010" but changed it to just show the ones that went against the trend instead, makes much more interesting reading, after all, we are in election mode

Coalition vows to block internet filter
Opposition treasury spokesman Joe Hockey says the Coalition will not back the Government's proposed internet filter.
The Government announced the filter two years ago as part of its cyber safety program to protect children from pornography and offensive material.
The plan has been criticised by internet users who claim it will slow download speeds and lead to unwarranted censorship.

A great victory for this thread

Brilliant that coalition have come out and said this and pointed out that it will achieve diddly squat and is in fact dangerous because it instills a false sense of security.

Re: The Sensible Australian Election Thread
A great victory for freedom of information I would prefer. Without coalition and green support this policy is now effectively dead in the water, as it can't hope to pass through the senate, even if Labor are returned to power.
I've always rather liked Joe Hockey. I don't think I would have had any issues with voting for him. I'm still remain to be convinced by Abbot though.

If the LNP had someone other than Abbott in charge then Labo(u)r really would be in the merde. Not that they are cruising now but ...

Abbott is not the best guy for the job but I am still going to vote for him.

Not sure that its a vote winner for the coalition though as the in the same report the greens also came out against it and pointed out that this means that the idea is now dead whoever gets elected.

Re: The Sensible Australian Election Thread
It will probably still affect things, based on those who feel it is very important, and who were undecided on who to vote for, and who may now vote for the party who is thinking like them ?

Re: The Sensible Australian Election Thread
My personal prediction is Labor returned to power with a very slim majority and Joe Hockey taking over the reigns from Abbot.

I dont think that the Libs will jettison Abbott if they lose narrowly. Even though I dont believe that Abbot is electable I do give him credit for destabilising and ultimately removing our Kevin as he got under his skin in a way that Malcolm Turnbull (or Joe Hockey) could never do, Kevin genuinely hates Abbott he was only contemptuous of Turnbull.

GetUp High Court win overturns Howard's electoral laws
DAN HARRISON AND TOM ARUP
August 6, 2010 - 12:35PM
The High Court has ruled that Howard-era laws that close the electoral rolls on the day that writs for an election are issued are invalid.
The Australian Electoral Commission will now scramble to contact an estimated 100,000 Australians to inform them they are entitled to vote at the August 21 election.

Interesting, in a close election this could change things. Get up are taking an active role in trying to shape the election via direct action and social networking, they also have a hard hitting anti Abbott advert to ait on TV in the next few days.
apart from Get Up I'm struck by the lack of social networking and new media in this election, both sides have wasted an oportunity here.
