And their poll results:
Does Australia need a high-speed rail link between its major east-coast cities?
  • 76% Yes, between Brisbane, Sydney and Melbourne
  • 9% Yes, but only between Sydney and Melbourne
  • 15% No, too expensive to build and it's easier to fly

I was in Germany a few weeks ago and caught a train from Stuttgart to Heidelberg. It was not an ICE intercity express train yet it was doing over 220kmph. A day ticket for 2 adults and a child with which we could take any train (except ICE) in that region was 30 Euros.

These boys know how to do trains.

This is a $20million study for Newcastle to Sydney. No committment and relies on state rail to do some upgrades as the line is already full. Would be great for me though. The article does say that no one in NSW believes any politicians transport promises as so many projects have never made it further than our legislators mouthes.

I think the only realistic options for true HS rail (250kph+) in Australia are your route and:
Sydney-Melbourne
Sydney-Canberra (lack of passengers might be an issue)
Maybe Geelong-Melbourne

Routes like Brisbane-Sydney would cost too much but might be more affordable with <200kph speeds. Same for Perth-Bunbury, Cairns-Brisbane etc.

NSW government is dysfunctional and broke so nothing will happen until this is sorted out.

Yes, the Germans have a great history of getting people on to trains, but I'm not sure it's one they want to shout about too much...

Now all we need is a poll with the question:

Would you rather have a rail link Mel - Syd - Bne or a NBN?

I think rail would win out with a vast majority.

A high speed rail line to Newcastle would make it easily commutable, but at the moment it just takes too long, though some do actually do it. The problem at the moment is that teh train stops at every little pokey town on the line, so that one or two people can get on/off.

If Newcastle were suddenly within [reasonable] commuting distance, it may do a great deal to take the pressure of off the Sydney Basin. Housing is much better value in Newcastle, and an influx of people looking for better value accommodation would bring more investment in the area. Plus, you have the Hunter on your doorstep too. For the government, I can see some real benefits to a high speed Newcastle to Sydney line.

Syd to Canberra via airport, Cambelltown, Liverpool, Goulbourn would work. It could force a lot of public servants onto the train and not be held up by Canberra fog. Syd to Canberra is not too far. Sydney to Wollongong would also cover some dense population areas. You then have a network of high speed trains which can be used to expand to new proposed cities.

Sadly NSW will remain dysfunctional.

There is the Central Coast in the middle as well. This announcement is aimed at the marginal seats on the Central Coast.
