My dog loves bodysurfing so Altona is good for her but now it's getting cooler (my barefeet suffer on the cold mud!), we don't go there, we go to the dog free area on the waterfront in W'town instead.

We're not comparing beaches of the country here, nor of the world, and for a family with a young child the beach is actually perfect! We don't want to put them off now - or is that what you're doing, so you can have it to yourself?

(I tried to insert a pic... hopefully it works!)
It is good for the young kids, we have two and have taken them there, just that I don't think it's lovely, that is all

We have to live really close to the city so we can take our 2 kids to nursery and pick them up in good time. We work from 8 to 5 and feel pressure to work longer hours. We drop the kids off at 7.30 and pick them up at 5.45. We live in Port Melbourne and drive in. If we lived in Bayside we would be pushing it. The other alternative when we work late is one picks them up and one drops them off and the other gets the train/tram. There is plenty of work out in the suburbs near Bayside so you may be lucky and get a job there. Long term we want to be in Bayside so I'll be looking for a job further out in a few years time.

My 2 (9 and 11) are at "Willy" primary and are very happy.
The beach is lovely here and because we're in a bay, there are no waves (except if windy), strong currents or sharks.
I haven't found out re ice-skating but there must be a rink in the city which is 20 mins away, otherwise there's a huge selection of sports, one of which is basketball which is very popular.
There's even lacrosse in the winter.
Children have no excuse to be bored here!
Hey, thanks for the info. It's all good to know. It certainly seems to be the case with this area, you either love it or hate it.
Our friends live in East melbourne and say they've never ventured west so i appreciate all the info i can get from you guys on here, cheers.

We hope to move to the west at the end of September so I'm grateful for the info also. We have seen a really nice Porter Davis home so hopefully it will just be a matter of finding a site when we get down.

Yeah, "lovely" is a stupid adjective I guess, but not as stupid as "good"!
I hate it when you ask someone how they are and they say "Gooooooood", how annoying!

Hey Gail,

There does seem to be a few IT jobs out there. Not many full time ones but I'm told thats the norm over here. I've got a small 2 week contract so far and have my CV posted everywhere so hopefully something longer term will come up so we can get our own house asap (really missing our own space now).

The OH got a long contact after 1st interview this week so things are positive.

Not bad for 2 weeks in I'd say.
Hope it works out for you!

The main beach at the end of Pier Street in Altona is fine, and its clean. Just in case you though that that description applied to all the beaches in Altona

Yes, but the beach he's describing is as he described and is just hunky-dory for my doggie!

Hi Kapri

Busy first week sorting eveything out and finding our bearings, we have already secured a rental at Mount Martha, first house we saw and first application too We pick up the keys on Tuesday but will stay in the apartment in the city until the end of April when we have to move out. Our furniture doesn't arrive until the end of May so at least we have some home comforts. Jason starts work on Monday, tomorrow so we will see how that goes.

In all so far so good, just need to sell the UK house

Have a look at our blog for some pics and daily updates

Hows your application going, any news yet?

Tracy

I have just accepted a job at the Royal Melbourne hospital...any other nurses on this thread?

We are hoping to be there by the end of the Autumn...on a 457.

Did consider Sydney...but not for long Cant really explain it, but Melbourne has a better feel to it. Hoping to rent a flat just outside the CBD, maybe Carlton or Prahran. Looking forward to a bit of cafe culture!

Best of luck to everyone who is planning a relocation to Melbourne
