Re: The Melbourne thread
We can't afford Blackburn either but its reasonable enough for renting and central enough for OH til we're sure where he's going to end up getting job!
We're looking further east too. Can't spend more than 450K tops!!!! Properties in Bayswater/Wantira/etc seem reasonable enough - and near trains etc.

Re: The Melbourne thread
Please can anyone help. My husband is in Melbourne at the moment, he had an interview for a job in Preston and has another for one in Dandenong. He's been sent with a list of areas to scout out but because it's such a massive area he's covering he's feeling a bit overwhelmed. I know there have been loads of posts similar to this, but I just wanted to try and get back to him tomorrow because he's driving around like a mad fool but doesn't really know what he's looking for!
We want to rent initially, hopefully 1 year or possibly up to 2, but hope to get the area right because don't want to have to move the children around if we can help it (cos of schools). When we buy we'll be looking between 500k - 600k AUD, so we want to rent somewhere that we'll be able to afford to buy in - which rules out beachside close to Melbourne from what I've seen on realestate.
He's been told by someone at the company he's seen in Preston to look at Doreen - has anyone any comments?
If he was to work in Dandenong then not sure whether to try somewhere near Mornington where we have friends or head inland and try for a larger property for our money.
If anyone could spare a couple of mins and pass on any tips or advice we'd be really grateful.

Millie,
My Dad lives in Doreen and loves it. That's where we're heading.
Just about commutable to the CBD I think (hope) and you get a good house for the price. Not sure how good it would be to commute to Dandenong though, perhaps the guys "on the ground" could help out with this one??
Good luck,
Colin

You may just be able to afford Thornbury @ those prices, I wouldnt move out to Doreen or Epping or Whittlesea if I were you, as the schools up that way are not the best. The public schools in Northcote are great as they compete directly with private schools and produce good results. (we send our kids to Northcote for that very reason). Reservoir is a fairly good suburb value wise, but the schools are crap, and you may get caught up with school boundary issues, as the schools towards the city become more popular. Ethnic divisions rear their ugly head as you move directly North from Preston & Coburg outwards. Whereas south towards the City Gentrification is moving along at a great rate, Preston is doing really well in the Gentrification stakes at present, in fact It's blitzing Coburg, much to my chagrin, so if you can afford to buy there, you will see real capitol growth, unless the world market totally collapses. Fantastic shopping, transport. infrastructure and restaurants in these areas. Far more choice for enjoying yourself socially than compared to further out.
Preston/Coburg/Heidelberg and anything South of this region towards the city are very much on a upward trend socially and value wise.
Tip, even in this topsy turvey housing market, if anywhere will double in value in the next 5 years it will be Thornbury.
