Far better materials used in the UK, Oz houses are wood with a brick veneer.
Also, if you have one built, you need to factor in the little extras. Have a read through this thread for example.
Here's a very accurate one on the cost of living in Queensland, as an example.

Thanks Polly, I've just read the thread and all I can say is crikey! When we were thinking of living in Brisbane we were goind to build, but were put off when we couldn't really pin the builder down on a final price. It was far too variable for my liking. That other thread gives an excellent example of just how much the extras are and how they can vary.

Out of curiosity, most houses here are build by a building company where you effectively choose one off the peg, customise it and they build the whole thing. Does anyone here build in the style of how you see it being done in the UK on programs like Grand Designs? You know where you basically build it yourself and subcontract out bits and pieces and you manage your own build? Is that done here at all?

Hi there...

we applied on the 21st of June, under the "designated area sponser", so we'll be relocating to Brisbane, for the time required, then move onto Perth, afterward..

we're going to go over in June, and validate the visas, then come back sell up etc.. we never really anticipated it going through this quickly..

we had our Medicals & Police checks Scot&Eng, done in September 06.

we're shocked at how quickly it has all gone through...

good luck to you all

Bonny

Why bring the football fans in Greece into this? Maybe they were only there for the football and, so what if they were?

I don't know whereabouts you are in the UK and I have no idea where you are thinking of setting up home if you get here, but my advice would be, don't believe everything you hear and read. I have read through a number of your posts again, including #442 and, in my humble opinion, from the way you post, nothing anyone could say to you would make any difference. You have your mind made up that life is better in Australia, even without ever having been here yourself. Oz is great syndrome.
I dont think you fully undersand what i am saying.I have noticed you have started and written on a lot of posts ref moving back to the uk !!!....you live in perth for a start isnt that where all the poms go.....and one of your posts state about finding British curry in perth!!!!!...............I think you think I am writing about you......perhaps you dont like alot of things about oz as much as britain...thats up to you, i am off to either queensland or adelaide. Not perth.......I am going to australia in 5 days maybe then i will get a shock and see how awful it is and my ozzi syndrome !!!!!!will just vannish. ......i will visit jobs, schools, people who are english living there....estate agents and get a feel for the place just think in queensland i can buy a beautiful large house with land instead of struggle living in a small ex council house, also the job offers for carpentry there is £14.50 per hour a bit better than £ 8.50 here hey......and you wonder why i want to move ....

I've watched them all so far (will watch today's tonight) and yesterday's family seemed to me to have had the most clear cut decision. Victor Harbour seemed the ideal place for them. I spent a day there in October, it seemed a nice town and the surrounding countryside is lovely. I hope they make it, they seemed a nice family.

One thing that has really struck me about this daft programme is that no real thought seems to have gone in to where to send the families. If some of the families have had a budgets where they would really struggle to get somewhere nice in Sydney or Perth, why didn't they think about sending them somewhere cheaper to start with? And why no Melbourne or Hobart or anywhere not a capital city?

Go through the forum with various searches like "plumber wages" or "plumber queensland" and you will find lots of threads.

Similar - go through the forum and search for Brisbane - in fact just read back through threads over the last week. There are a phenomenal amount of posters on this board in Queensland, both settled and unsettled. can't offer to meet you myself as I am off to the UK on the 12th

Yep, all welcome at The Gap - print the maps off the thread and you should have no problem finding it. I just have to stay sober enough to get on the plane on the 11th or I won't be in the Uk on the 12th !
You won't have any problem finding us at the club - the staff have been warned!
