The same could be said for almost any opinion that anyone can give. At the end of the day this forum consists of people giving advice based on their experience, no one should be shot down or flamed for sharing theirs.

When I first joined I remember answering someone's question based on my own experiences at POE, several people turned on me for mis-advising the OP! Apparently only they could give valid advice!

I firmly believe that many here are discouraged from sharing and responding, based on the way they see a small minority treat others.

dbj1000 - Excellent contribution to the discussion! You come in, throw out some abuse, make no constructive addition to what is being said, and leave. Kind of a good example of the bad aspects of this forum.

I gave valid advice based on my experience, as is the point of the forum.

Instead of making any valid contribution to this thread you have chosen to make a personal attack on me? Why not say nothing?

Well when you've got over your wailing and gnashing of teeth, find the post about immigration that upset you so much and we'll analyse it to see if you're just a drama queen or actually have a valid point. Nobody in this thread so far has actually given any concrete examples of what concerns them....so you can be first.

I know you don't have the intelligence to realise it, but this whole thread is about individuals like you.

I don't need to find any examples, you have given me a perfect one right here.

Yes, you do.....if you want to retain any credibility whatsoever. You cited an example, and now refuse to produce it.

Actually I went out for dinner in the real world. Sorry that I left, otherwise I would have added more constructive comments to this incredibly valuable thread.

Feel free to provide your personal support and in depth knowledge to the next 50 Disney fans who ask about moving their extended family to Florida with a NVQ in hairdressing. I'm sure you'll do a bang-up job.

In the meantime I'll stick to posting whatever the f*** I like, regardless of the whingers, and helping people with the trivial things like first-year immigrant taxes, the H1B/NIW experience, establishing credit, evaluating qualifications...

And calling people tossers when that's what they are.

My thought is, this is just like any other forum.

You join, you search it out to see if the question is asked before, before posting.

It's common courtesy.

People have contributed a lot of time and effort to help others and they're more willing to help those who at least help themselves. This is a major life changing decision after all and not something as trivial as what brand of peanuts one should consider buying.

The wiki has also been built up over time, by a lot of people. It answers many of the basic questions, for questions that get asked repeatedly, often questions that can be found on the first page or two.

If people can't even be arsed to look down the first page at the very least, then they should expect some people to get a little arsey in return.

It's just the nature of forums.

Yes, it's free, which means you will get all kinds responding. If you don't like it, you don't post and you read up instead.

If everyone wanted just the pretty butterflies, this place would be dead, the info would be drivel, people would be strung along and go in circles.

Some people just don't like the answers they get, but they very rarely get bad information here.

This dream has very little relevance to the modern realities of US immigration. One of the hardest things for other people to understand is that America doesn't have open doors for decent, hardworking people who want better lives for their families. That moment has been and gone. The practical realities are that immigration here is niche-led: family, marriage, specialist skills.
That's one of the best descriptions of the current state of US immigration I've read so far. Kudos to you! It may even be worthy of addition to 'Pulaski's Ways', as a backgrounder for those people who are dazed and confused because they can't find a Pulaski pathway into the US.

Well, a most interesting and amusing thread this has turned out to be. Having read all of your responses, and other newbie-bashing threads, I think the fog is starting to clear.

Having already gone through an independent migration process myself some years back (albeit to Oz not US), I do think I can connect with the sometimes harsh responses to certain questions. If you are one of the many on here who have jumped through the seemingly endless hoops to get from country A to country B, with all the hard work and frustration that entails, then it must feel almost insulting when someone asks a question that immediately exposes complete naivety, with an obvious lack of even the most basic research.

Furthermore, if a potential migrant cannot withstand the rigours of open debate on a forum such as this, then what chance has she or he in a completely new ‘real world’ environment? ie a new country. As someone here has said, regarding your migration hopes v chances....better to know the truth now. And this I think is the point...No matter how the message is delivered, the truth, above anything else, is fundamentally what people need to hear, especially new-comers. Sugar-coat it if you like, or wrap it up in bile...as long as it’s honest.

So I did have a really important question to ask, but I can’t stop watching those little guys on Bob’s avatar. Their work rate is phenomenal. Fascinating........

I've got to be honest here. I asked the question as some of you may know about the aircraft engineering option as a pathway into the US. The response was honest, forthright and didn't offend me in any way. It was also unfortunately bad news, telling me (as I'm sure it is for many others) that immigration to the USA is unlikely unless I go down one of the well proven routes. Now Mrs Palooza wouldn't approve of me shacking up with a yank so that's out but in no way have I been put off by this information.

If you currently aren't in a position to be attractive to the US then [I]make[I] yourself into an attractive proposition. I'm going after positions with US companies based in GBR and I'm also trying to have my paper published. Just because somebody tells you you're not suitable doesn't mean you should take it personally. The posters are stating facts based on experience that isn't easy to come by. I dare say i will have many more setbacks and may ultimately end up with the door slammed shut in my face but that's not going to stop me working towards it. If I gave up at the first sign of trouble I'd still be struggling with Vulgar fractions in secondary school!!

Nothing that is worthwhile ever came easy

Those words keep me going. Bottom line is life is tough and you can't have it all your own way. A thick skin, a never-give up attitude and a large dusting of good fortune all go hand in hand to success in life.

To be fair, most peoples' posts are based on their personal experience. The problem arises when they fail to mention that this was their personal experience.

For example, someone posts: Don't tell the officer that you're visiting your fiancé(e) or you'll be sent to secondary.

... when what they actually meant to post was: When I told the officer that I was visiting my fiancé(e), I was sent to secondary.

But the latter is not what gets posted... and so their personal experience becomes an unintentional directive that newbies might read and take as gospel. The result? Members jump on the "advice" in an effort to fix what was written... when what was said wasn't actually what the poster intended to say.

In my personal experience, people usually don't write what they actually intend to say! More often than not, however, I write exactly what I mean to say... and if that is interpreted as rude or unhelpful... well, I'm prepared to live with that.

Ian - one of the brutally honest among us.
