Ah, the good old "if you don't like it, go home" line. I never get tired of hearing it, even after the 20,000th time. Well done MrDub! Keep up the good work.

Much of what I've seen of the Southeast and Midwest is so dreary and dull that even a visit to some of these places can be painful. When Walmart, cable TV and meth are your best options for entertainment, as is the case in many of these places, then you know you have a problem.

So don't presume that Houston is a definitive representative of the US any more than Hull is a prime exemplar of life in the UK. Location within a country matters, not just the country itself.

Equally dont presume that Houston is a definitive representation of Texas - much nicer than Hades!

[QUOTE=snowbunny]A German woman we met this past weekend said it was horrible and that she had hated living there, but likes living in the Hill Country west of Austin.

QUOTE]

ahhh, the Hill Country- God's Country!!! The German woman ought to be happy there- there is a huge German community in Fredicksburg and New Braunfells (sp?).

One day I hope to move back there....

Thanks for that advice but I'm not giving in yet, sorry my post depressed you. Easy scenario 'go home'...lol yep could do that right now, I have a house waiting for me in lovely rainy Surrey but I have a lovely husband here and if you had read all the thread you would have hopefully understood that I should have changed the thread to read 'Anything good about living in Houston'. You would also have read the various comments about Houston, it is not the idyllic dream place that anyone would retire to and like I said we are here for the pay check. My husband was born close to Austin and we have family in Dallas and although just a few hrs away life is quite different there. The reason for me posting on this BE website was to find out if there are any Brits in Houston as I am not meeting any. I am not trying to be sarcastic about the USA. Hey MrDub I am down but not out and tks again for your constructive advice Merry Christmas to you

Interesting - would have to agree. My wife is a USC from upstate NY, and we endured 17 months in Houston before making it back to the northeast.
Find it more amenable here (the weather makes a huge difference), but can only reiterate what's already been said - the standard of living is better here, but the quality of life is worse.
