Trump now fearing a 3rd party run against him? Bizarre!
In another boisterous victory speech-press conference combo, Trump called on Sen. Marco Rubio to leave the race and suggested that he might not even bother to campaign if the “#NeverTrump†movement challenges him in the general election. Such a move, he warned, would guarantee Hillary Clinton a chance to replace the late conservative justice Antonin Scalia.“If they run a third party or an independent party, if they do that, it will make it impossible for the Republican candidate, on the assumption it’s me, to win,†Trump said. “The Democrats would have an absolute free run. Probably you wouldn’t even campaign because it would be impossible to win.†|

With a brokered convention, the GOP establishment may try to craft a "unity ticket" of sorts that it can live with. Of course, that may not work, as it will need to convince at least some Cruz and/or Trump delegates to switch to this yet-to-be-determined other candidate, one who will presumably have little in common with their preferred candidate. The establishment has really failed here, with Bush and Ryan both out and Kasich barely holding on. But if Kasich can win Ohio, then the odds of the brokered convention go up considerably. |

A brokered convention could cause enough infighting to really destroy the party. Pulling the nomination from Trump could cause many of his supporters to stay home on election night. It would not be a bad thing for the party to implode so it has a chance to rebuild without the hate and ignorance the has developed over the years. We need a rational 2nd party not afraid to compromise. Although I would not be surprised to see a 3rd party emerge, and not a pretty one.

They can put forth another candidate...but then it becomes a task of getting other candidates delegates to switch. Not an easy task.

The primaries and (stupid) caucuses are a relatively new construct. |
