Around a third of the people in the streets where I live are Spanish businessmen who all come from northern Spain. Many have elderly parents living with them. They all vote Conservative (PP).
I've been to many a party at their houses and after the wine has flowed freely, and they're sure their doors are locked, they play the old music. I call it Franco music, but not to their faces.
As a foreign guest, I politely stand for their toasts, but I have no national vote nor much interest in their politics.

However, it has to be said that the PP know how to attract most of the right-wing vote, with pro-Church, centralised state and anti-liberal policies.
Incidentally, in Navarra earlier this year, my friend (who is a staunch believer in independence for the Basques, including the Navarra province) admitted that although much was made of Basque solidarity, when it came to elections time the local population in Navarra voted overwhelmingly for conservatives (the allies of the PP there).

Quite honestly, some things are not deserving of politeness. I can't imagine my father, who fought against Hitler for six years, standing "politely" for Franco supporters in any way whatsoever.

It's an emotive topic, I realise that, but I only posted my experience as a long term resident in Spain, and to deny that many people in Spain still regard Franco as a hero for Spain would be to deny the truth.
I don't know where you live, I suspect it's in the US, and good luck to you, but I wouldn't stand for the KKK celebrating the hanging of black people either.

I understand what you're saying, but I belong to a different generation and live in Spain. And, politely, your father didn't fight against Franco, Spain was neutral in WW2.

As for Spain's neutrality - as a nation they didn't fight during WWII, but they certainly let Hitler practice there as a warm up in support of Franco's forces. My father didn't go to fight, but many from the UK did - "they went because their open eyes could see no other way".
And you are right about the KKK. I wouldn't be polite to them either.

Franco really was a hero to a lot of the older generation. Attitudes changed as he aged and the new order came in bringing strikes, pornography for sale. Youth getting more freedom etc. Earlier this year there was a large tribute to Franco in a Madrid square (mainly elderly people) they sang the falange hymn and had lots of speeches. It is wishful thinking that he didn't have a lot of support.

I hesitate on elaborating on my No answer. On a non-serious note, you seem to fly off the handle far too easily. I jokingly posted that you should be banned, and you kicked off with a load of nonsense for no reason.
Of course you shouldn't be banned, if you were even half a gentleman, instead of just a groom, you would fall on your sword, like the person whose horse you are grooming would.
Now, before you kick off again, I'm only joking.
I remember you posting in reply to a Spaniard when you said, 'Shut up you silly xxxx'. It had me in stitches.
But, should you decide to fall on your sword, you'll be sorely missed. Just like toothache.

I know you think you are adorable and I will admit, sometimes I have smiled at some of you off the wall posts but I'm afraid I lost all respect for you, oh and there are MANY on here I respect, I might not agree with them but I do respect them, and I lost all respect for you when you not only posted a highly offensive comment (you and I both know what I am talking about) but you also haven't offered even the smallest of apologies, even in private, which would always have remained private. Now what was that you said about being a gentleman?
Secondly.... I groom for no one now, I couldn't stand the toffs.

This has been an entertaining thread to read. Having just come across it and read it all in one go my observation for what its worth is:
1) There will probably be an increase in tourists to Spain from Muslim countries in the future.
2) Providing halal food in your restaurant could therefore be a good business opportunity.
3) Lots of people on this thread (myself included) know of muslims who drink alcohol and eat pork.
4) However, no-one on this thread knows enough (any) orthodox, practicing muslims living in muslim countries who might come on holiday to Spain, to ask if they would be prepared to eat alongside non-muslims eating pork or other prohibited food and drinking alcohol.
5) It is therefore impossible to give a definitive answer to the question.
Personally I don't go to restaurants that serve lots of different types of food. I like my chinese in a chinese, italian in an italian etc. etc. I suspect orthodox muslims would hope to find restaurants that cater for their tastes only (and probably run by muslim expats). The problem with such a business would be finding customers outside the tourist season. They would need to attract locals to stay open all year round. I think it could be a hugh risk to just add halal food to an existing menu.
As someone said earlier a lot of proper market research required.

I wouldn't buy halal meat knowingly. That's why I never buy from British supermarkets as they have admitted that most of their meat is killed that way now (nothing like pleasing the minority
) I buy from a local Butcher who is a bit more expensive but top class for quality.
I have extended Jewish family, many of them not religious but AFAIK none of them eat pork. I think it is probably like the aversion the British have to horsemeat as they are not strict re. kosher food. I think the Muslims are quite well catered for in most countries....if you have money they will cater for what you want.
