I know plenty who prefer bottles and I guess you can taste the difference sometimes but after several JD or rum and cokes it all starts tasting the same and you mix anything with enough ice and its all good.

They may prefer it but at 50p a shot or 1.30 a bottle most choose the 50p option.

Another thread that's ended up a bunfight

If I indulge in a copa in Spain, I expect the measure (whether of gin or whisky or rum or whatever) to be quite substantial. Also the price (often 4-5 Euros), so I also expect the mixer to come in a bottle. Quite different to the UK where a short (or even double) is a small measure, and so a dash is quite sufficient.

Its certainly a rule in these religions. I'm a bit of a hybrid, my family is C of E and Jewish, I have faith but follow neither dogma and eat what I like. That said I observe certain rules and protocols when entertaining Jewish and Muslim friends; its only polite.

As for means of slaughter I really don't care if the meat is Halal, Kosher or Jhatka for that matter.

I havent read all of the comments but we buy halal meat simply because its a good price and good quality too. There are at least 3 morrocan shops in our town.Excellent for roasting, or huge steaks....we just dont ask for pork.

And I love the ramaddam treats they make also.

I wouldn't buy halal meat knowingly. That's why I never buy from British supermarkets as they have admitted that most of their meat is killed that way now (nothing like pleasing the minority) I buy from a local Butcher who is a bit more expensive but top class for quality.

I have extended Jewish family, many of them not religious but AFAIK none of them eat pork. I think it is probably like the aversion the British have to horsemeat as they are not strict re. kosher food. I think the Muslims are quite well catered for in most countries....if you have money they will cater for what you want.

That's not quite true. Some UK supermarkets sell some Halal meat. Mainly NZ lamb. I don't see how it's slaughtered, would make any difference to why you would buy it.

I am an uneasy meat eater anyway...before you go off on one I dont'like to think that the meat i eat has been from an animal dying a slow death with it's throat cut whilst having some stupid ritual prayer to allah recited over it

Quite right, the guy saying the prayer doesn't give a toss about the animal but believes that having a quick word with the Mohammed makes everything OK.

I doubt anyone could live a true Muslim life given the millions of interpretations of the good book. Hypocrites most of them. And before you all start ranting and raving I will give you one anecdote. A work colleague from the Leicester area used to get pissed as fart with the rest of us on a regular basis, he had no idea where Mecca was if you gave him a compass yet when his father died he refused an alcoholic drink because it was un-islamic. I could give you more but I suspect that you all have similar stories. I see nothing atractive whatsoever about this religion.

Unlike the non-Halal meat of course, nice quick clean deaths......

It's just not a matter of the religion, if any, of the people doing the slaughtering.

If you want to be a vegetarian, then fine. That's a different matter.

used to work with a guy who was in tears because his father had arranged a marriage for him "back home" in Pakistan, didnt tell him until he gave him the plane tickets. Came back with his bride, within a month he was out partying and sleeping around with his 2 English girlfriends as if nothing had happened.

Do you think that is different from any other religion? I only know anything about Christianity and I can assure you you won't find a more hypocritical bunch anywhere...

Traditional pig slaughter, matanza, in Spain is quite similar to halal but without the prayers. One quick cut with a knife and collect the blood to make morcilla. So if you are boycotting halal on grounds of animal welfare, forget all those lovely artesan-made sausages and chorizos ...

I'd rather eat meat killed this way than from animals packed into the back of a lorry, sent 200 miles to a slaughterhouse then suspended upside down in the air on a conveyor belt, thanks.
