Gibraltar

Re: Gibraltar
The British public does give a damn about disputes such as the UKraine when governements start making suggestions about miltary involvement or their energy prices increasing etc.
It does not give a damn about Gib unless it is suggested that we are going to send a few traffic wardens out to police the queues.

It might be of little consequence to people in the UK.
It IS to Gibraltarians and everybody who lives in the Campo de Gibraltar - both Spanish and expat.

the same people know and understand about Gib and its problems with the little Hitler's in Spain and will take every opportunity to take the mickey out of them.
as the same people know that the queue's are just that queue's, they aren't illegal parking so what would someone want traffic wardens for
and traffic wardens in real live moving traffic situations usually lead to worse traffic jams and irate drivers.

Re: Gibraltar
Looks like the Gibraltar Government is coming under increasing pressure from London to end the fishing dispute (although Gibraltar has no fishing industry).
First Minister Fabian Picardo is exploring ways to let Spanish fishermen back into BGTW.
Here's a report from 5th May - Resolution of fishing dispute imminent.
http://www.typicallyspanish.com/news..._dispute.shtml
And another from 10th May
http://www.chronicle.gi/headlines_details.php?id=33881
Strange these reports weren't posted here. You'd think some Gibraltarians wouldn't want the dispute to end.
Since Picardo's been such a good boy, maybe Cameron will lend him some sailors to pull the concrete blocks out of the water.

Why not indeed.
The Spanish cowboys having dredged and filtered almost every square km of EU waters till they're almost devoid of life, why not let them finish the job off altogether.

Re: Gibraltar
The Spanish have been fishing the waters around their coast for millennia, and you can still get a damn good fish supper in any fishing port.

most of the British public don't know (nor care) where the hell the place is, letalone how to spell it.
the same people know and understand about Gib and its problems with the little Hitler's in Spain and will take every opportunity to take the mickey out of them.

So that's taken care of the majority and Democracy has been served........
Perhaps there is an English 10% that considers Gib, Insha Allah......

Re: Gibraltar
larger shops like Alcampo mark their fish with the location caught, none is from "local" sources, most from North and Western Atlantic.
why do you think the "fishermen" from Algeciras are complaining about the GC stopping their dodgy fag runs, its their only source of income.

Re: Gibraltar
Just goes to show the transport links that the Spanish have developed to satisfy their seemingly insatiable appetite for all varieties of fish.
And yet I still see the little boats rushing back to my local port from all points of the compass at 5 o'clock in the evening with their catches from supposedly sterile waters.
And I still see the very bright lights of the squid boats operating out to sea late at night.
Why bother if there's nothing there ?

Re: Gibraltar
But the " best " come from Scotland.
Years ago UK fisherman discovered that there was a limited market in the UK for many species of fish but demand in Spain and France could not be met from local supplies.
The bulk of UK caught cold water prawns, dublin bay prawns are exported.
In season truck loads of cuttlefish and spider crabs head for the restaurants of Spain, France etc.
