VOGG campaigner complains to Pope over 13TV ‘onslaught’

Local campaigner Julio Pons has written to Pope Francis to complain about 13 Television, whose majority shareholder is the Catholic Church through the Conferencia Episcopal Española.

Writing under the letterhead of the Voice of Gibraltar Group, Mr Pons said the channel promoted extremist right-wing politics and was engaged in an “onslaught” against Gibraltar.

“How can this channel be a representative of the Roman Catholic Church which you represent…?” Mr Pons asked.

PSOE spokesman urges dialogue to ‘breach the fence

The PSOE spokesman in the Andalusian Parliament has called for dialogue as a means to foster better relations between communities on either side of the border.

In an interview with La Verdad, Mario Jiménez said the PP national government had altered the balance of mutual understanding in a bid to ‘lift the fence’ between the two communities.

Sr Jiménez said issues of sovereignty corresponded to the Government of Spain and that the Junta would always back Madrid.

But he added that the day-to-day existence of communities on both sides of the border was an inescapable reality that went beyond the issue of national flags.

These communities wanted to coexist peacefully to have the space for social, cultural and economic cooperation for their mutual benefit, he told the newspaper.

“The [Spanish] government has chosen to alter this area of coexistence between Gibraltar, La Linea and the surrounding area and we do not agree,” he said

That pretty much does sum up canal 13 and is why I stopped watching it a long time ago.

Gibraltar rock will mark deep link to Royal Marines

A two-tonne piece of the Rock will be used to create a memorial celebrating Gibraltar’s historic connection to the Royal Marines.

The sculpted boulder will be placed on Woodbury Common, an area in south Devon frequently used by Royal Marine recruits from nearby Royal Marine Training Centre Lympstone.

The initiative was driven in large part by the Governor, Sir James Dutton, who is a retired Royal Marine with a distinguished military career.

The Royal Marines have a deep connection to Gibraltar and the 1704 capture of the Rock is the only battle honour on their colours.

“Every Royal Marine wears it every day on his cap badge,” Sir James said

Govt curfew on tobacco sales at vanguard of draconian clampdown

by Brian Reyes

Tobacco sales will be restricted to one carton of cigarettes per person under new legislation that will also strengthen the powers of local law enforcement agencies to tackle smuggling and related anti-social behaviour.

The new rules will also seek to punish retailers who are convicted of tobacco offences and will introduce a curfew on tobacco sales.

The Government is increasing the powers to Customs and the Royal Gibraltar Police to combat anti social behaviour linked to tobacco. The main measure will be the designation of residential estates as “Red Zones” under the Tobacco Act.

Officers will be able to stop and search anyone not associated with the estate and will have the power to move people on.

Shops will, as from today, only be able to sell tobacco from 8 in the morning to 8 in the evening. The Government will also be publishing a bill to reduce the number of cigarettes that can be sold to any individual, at any one time, from the current one thousand to 200.
