Do you realise how much power has to be generated ????
Even one of the new QE class of carriers would be hard put to provide spare electricity after meeting all of her own needs. (once they are finished building of course).

All ships, including the new flotel are net users and have no spare capacity for "humanitarian" needs.

Spanish diplomacy urges Gibraltar rock ban

Spain’s Ministry for Foreign Affairs is urging Morocco and Portugal to block the sale of rocks to Gibraltar, according to the online publication El Confidencial.

The website reported at the weekend that the ministry headed by Jose Manuel García-Margallo had initiated contacts with “friendly countries” in a bid to stop Gibraltar’s “expansionist” plans.

El Confidencial repeated erroneous reports that the Rock is reclaiming land on the east side.

It was not clear on what grounds Spain was making the request.

Gibraltar has recently imported rock shipments from both Portugal and Morocco by sea after Spain banned such imports across the land border.

The rocks were lawfully purchased on the open market and used for EU-compliant coastal protection works in Sandy Bay.

Until now, Gibraltar imported building materials of this type from Spanish quarries.

A spokesman for No 6 Convent Place said the Gibraltar Government was aware of the online report but could not verify its veracity.

“Even if it is true, we are confident that it will not affect the government’s ability to source any rocks or materials that are required,” the spokesman.

So why is it that I keep hearing that a frigate on full tax-payers money can belt out enough leccy to power a town the size of Andover ?

Why did it take 5 hours to restore power ? Where did the spare capacity come from ? Please God, we didn't go cap in hand to the neighbours ?

Who is in charge of disaster recovery procedures over there ?

I do hope the docile Gibraltar press will push for answers to these questions, and as our resident wire-and-plier johnny on BEfS, D, I'm hoping you'll supply some answers too.

you "keep hearing"
you must be rereading MOD press releases and should get out more.

perhaps you think instead of having plugs on the jetties to enable all ships to take on shore power they should instead plug into the Gibraltar Grid and give that a top up.

5 hours? Luxury. We don't start counting it as a power cut for at least 12 hours!

Grasping at straws a bit Colgate/Signal, is that all you can think of for some cheapo snide today?

Well, yes.

I imagine shore-produced power would be cheaper for ships to use when tied-up, but say, destroyer produced power in an emergency, going the other way, would probably knock everybody's three-pin plugs out of the wall.

But you know more about these things than me.

Of course Gibraltar is in the EU,says top man Barroso

When the Spanish government recently questioned if Gibraltar was in the European union, a Basque MEP decided to clear the air by asking the European Commission about it. The EC President Barroso has provided the answer, confirming what we all know - that Gibraltar is part of the EU.

This is Barroso's answer on behalf of the Commission:"The European Union does not dispose of a territory in the way states do. The European Union is founded on the Treaty on European Union (TEU) and the Treaty on the Functioning of the European Union (TFEU) which provide for a territorial scope of application (Articles 52 TEU and 355 TFEU).

By virtue of Article 52(1) TEU, the treaties apply to the Member States. By virtue of Article 355(3) TFEU, the treaties apply as well to European territories for whose external relations a Member State is responsible; Gibraltar is considered to be such a territory.

"As a consequence, European law applies in principle to Gibraltar. However, it is not part of the customs territory of the Union (Article 4 of Regulation (EU) No 952/2013), and Union legislation in the areas of the common agricultural policy, the common fisheries policy and the common system of the value added tax does not apply to Gibraltar (Article 28 of the 1972 Act of Accession)."

GIBRALTAR'S REQUEST

*Of course Gibraltar is not part of the customs union, VAT and the Common Agricultural Policy because, at the time of British accession when Gibraltar joined with Britain, we asked to be left out of such areas as it was thought that it was in Gibraltar's best interests.

Don't flatter yourself, that rofl smiley was about calling a mere 5 hour outtage a power cut.

However, your comments about the Destroyer and making it a two post trivia is entertaining. That was what you were doing. Wasn't it?

Spanish Navy ship invades Gibraltar waters

And yet another Spanish Navy ship has invaded British Gibraltar Territorial Waters, which will lead to another paper protest from the UK which have been shown to be ineffective as the Spanish carry on regardless trying to make a fool of the Royal Navy.

There is no doubt that what the Spanish are doing is trying to claim that the waters are theirs, by making use of Gibraltar waters as if they belonged to them.

On this occasion, there was an unlawful incursion into BGTW by the Spanish Navy vessel Arnomendi yesterday morning.

LEGALLY FLAWED

Legal advisers in the Spanish Foreign Ministry have warned that the Spanish Government do not have a leg on which to stand on in legal terms when claiming what are British territorial waters.

Last December the Spanish Foreign Minister Sr Margallo admitted that if taken to an international tribunal, Spain would probably lose the case yet, knowingly, they keep breaking the law, a strange way for a NATO ally to behave.

Cameron probably lost his speedos swimming in Spanish waters last week.

The Spanish navy were probably trying to return them.

Spanish arrest in British Gibraltar waters

The Guardia Civil took executive action in Gibraltar waters on Thursday morning, seizing an apparently tobacco-laden fishing boat and towing it to Spanish waters.

Meanwhile, the Royal Gibraltar Police (RGP) has poured cold water on Spanish press reports claiming the RGP had injured a Guardia Civil officer in the incident.

SPANISH ARREST IN BRITISH WATERS

Shortly before midday, the RGP marine section deployed to the western end of the runway after detecting a fast-moving, unidentified RHIB in the area. The vessel turned out to be a Guardia Civil RHIB which took executive action, stopping and boarding a white fishing boat.

In a statement, the RGP points out the Civil Guard did this “outside their jurisdiction, and within British Gibraltar Territorial Waters (BGTW)”.

The Guardia Civil RHIB proceeded to tow the open-topped boat, along with its occupants, into Spanish waters. According to El Mundo, there were 300 hundred cartons of cigarettes stashed on board, which the newspaper claims originated in Gibraltar.

The Royal Navy reportedly attended the scene, as did several other RGP vessels.

GUARDIA CIVIL OFFICER INJURED… HIMSELF

The RGP went alongside the Guardia Civil RHIB to question the officers’ actions. But, according to their statement, “at no point did the RGP vessel come into contact with either the Guardia Civil RHIB or the open topped boat being towed”.

El Mundo was just one outlet reporting that a Guardia Civil officer was injured as a result of the RGP vessel knocking the RHIB and fishing boat.

However, a Guardia Civil spokesperson confirmed to the news agency EFE that there was no collision. The injuries being reported on appear to be minor, and moreover, sustained after the Guardia Civil officer landed awkwardly, having jumped aboard the fishing boat to take executive action in BGTW.

WILD WESTERN WATERS OFF RUNWAY

Thursday’s incident unfolded in a similar place to the incident in July last year, when a Guardia Civil launch interfered with a local tug that was laying the artificial reef.

They are also the same waters where, in June 2013, a local jet ski appeared to be shot at by the Guardia Civil.

In the past 12 months, the Spanish Civil Guard have also taken executive action in waters east of the Rock, boarding another Spanish fishing boat. At the time, the Foreign Office made a formal diplomatic protest.
