Spain to start work at frontier to improve crossings

by JOE GARCIA
The Spanish Government appears to have taken heed of the recommendations made by the EU about improving traffic flow, and it plans to start work at the frontier soon - for conclusion at the end of next year!

They say that their objective is to improve traffic flow for both pedestrian and vehicular traffic, while at the same time updating controls to detect those involved in illicit activities.

The Spanish interior ministry and the treasury department are due to approve the plans 'soon' to allow for the works to commence.

The works will cost over 5 million euros, according to the daily ABC.

The Spaniards are to modernise the means at their disposal to identify pedestrians, installing biometric controls as exist in some airports. The new system will be housed in a new building that is to be built. It is said such controls will apply to persons who comply 'with a series of requirements.'

What about vehicular traffic? There will be an extra lane for incoming traffic and likewise an extra lane for outgoing traffic, less than the six lanes which had been intimated at the time the EU inspectors carried out their visit to the frontier area.

Traffic flow into Spain will change direction and enter Spain after passing through a roundabout - the aim, say the Spanish, is to improve the detection of smugglers and also to make it more difficult for those inclined to making a quick get-away.

Vehicles to be checked will be directed to a scanner/workshop area, while others will carry on to the entry point.

Sounds as if it will make the queues worse Spain is probably getting the cost from the EU.

Ed Miliband: Gib border problems should be a priority for Britain

The Leader of the Labour Party, Ed Miliband, has described the border delays at the Gibraltar frontier as an issue of ‘deep concern’, and believes that resolving the dispute should become a priority for Britain.

Speaking at the Federation of Small Businesses conference in Manchester, Mr Miliband said the border delays were ‘unacceptable’, and the rights of the people of Gibraltar to Self Determination should be upheld.

He was answering a question from the President of the Gibraltar Federation, Gemma Vasquez, who attended the FSB event.

I wonder if he is hoping to persuade me not to vote UKIP

Spain’s “disastrous” and “malicious” action at our border

The Madrid Government's actions at our border with La Línea have been labelled as "disastrous" and "malicious". That is neither a Gibraltarian description, nor one from the cross-border action group but from PSOE in the Andalucía Parliament where it is the key party of government.
That PSOE has chosen to speak out in this way is very interesting. The socialists know that any show of support for Gibraltar against the Partido Popular's Francoist policies will be merely brushed aside by Madrid as being unpatriotic. One only has to see the disgraceful attacks on La Línea's brave socialist mayor Gemma Araujo by the PP and Gibraltar Español to see this.

The issue will be to guarantee the transit of people in a reasonable manner from one side of the Gibraltar border to another. PSOE speaks of the "disastrous" management of the border by the Spanish Government and says it has put at risk the jobs of 6,000 workers in the Campo de Gibraltar and the wider province of Cádiz.

Here the Spanish Government is on a very sticky wicket. Forget about sovereignty, forget about the red herring of fishing, forget about blocks of concrete just like the Spanish ones in its waters, this is about Andalucía jobs and the free movement of people.

Jiménez said that the Spanish Government has abandoned the rights of the workers. Hence it is acting in a non-humanitarian way throughout the Campo de Gibraltar but specifically in La Línea.

Govt signals tech clamp down on cross-border tax dodgers

The controls at the frontier – including face recognition and other high technology - which the European Commission has been seeking from both Gibraltar and Spain to create regulated fluidity, will be used to protect Gibraltar businesses and the economy from entities that provide services on the Rock without paying their due taxes.

The move is the closest Chief Minister Fabian Picardo has come to responding in kind to the decision in Madrid to seek to regularise the tax situation of people it deems live in Spain but work on the Rock.

PSOE slams Spanish Government over ‘conflict without solution’

Spain’s PSOE opposition has accused the Spanish Government of “starting a conflict” with Gibraltar without offering any “solutions” to the dispute, to the detriment of communities in the Campo de Gibraltar.

Good, there was a fair bit of activity last night including what I believe was an attempt at fishing off the South Mole but that didn't last long. But I also saw the GC heading to the East side which is out of my view, along with a lot of local law boat movements, which I believe is the activity reported by Sky.

The survey vessel was reported on the lunchtime news, but nothing in print here yet. That is the one that has lead to the summons.

Earlier in the day The Spanish warship Tarifa is pictured above as it sailed through British Gibraltar territorial waters yesterday.

This has been classified as an act of innocent passage. I am however under the impression that armed vessels have to request passage regardless. Certainly it is polite to do so.
