It would be a suitable place though for Nige to get over his humiliation after the general election, after all he has said he will resign afterwards.

ASCTEG: Spain's policies could affect jobs for Spaniards on the Rock
The Association representing Spanish Workers in Gibraltar, ASCTEG, has warned the Spanish Government's policy of controls at the frontier could have a negative effect on Spaniards seeking work on the Rock. It highlights the queues experienced on Friday by many day trippers enjoying 'Andalucia Day' in Gibraltar. The Association states the Spanish Government is spending an exorbitant amount of money on the Special Forces it's engaged to control the frontier, a branch of the Guardia Civil known as the black berets. ASCTEG claims they're being housed in a hotel outside La Linea, at significant cost to the taxpayer and that they undermine the Guardia Civil Officers who understand the area. It claims around nineteen thousand cross frontier workers a day are forced to endure the effects of this policy, which includes intimidation tactics.
ASCTEG points out that Gibraltar has announced a number of projects which could mean employment opportunities for many Spaniards. These include jobs constructing the new housing estates, carparks, a trade centre and the football stadium. Jobs, which it claims, could go to Portuguese and Rumanian Workers, because of the Spanish Government's policies.

The slow down of business has already had an affect on Spanish workers who are more likely to be laid off than any others due to their exposure to the tourist trade.
Also more and more people are abandoning Spanish accommodation and moving into Gibraltar with the resultant price rises.

What are the requirements to becoming a resident in Gibraltar?
And is the tax regime the same or more generous than the UK?

At the moment we are sort of nomads, we have a good offer on our flat in coruna.
It was left empty for most of the time, we are keeping the place in Alicante.
But we have given up Spanish residency as we do not want to expose ourselves to 'unfavourable' taxes.
We will spend 90 days or so in our UK home, and we have arranged accommodation in Portugal for a few months this year.
We are quite happy with this situation at the moment, but looking at future options, as we do like more sun than UK has to offer

If you live in Gibraltar you are automatically resident.
However there are some other ways of enjoying the Taxes here, but you would have a good deal of money ( more than me ) see :-

No Fred we don't live in Gibraltar, but after seeing your friend Ellie and her mate on 'Britain in the sun' it looks more and more appealing.

....and why not indeed ?
It's open to each and every one of us to make best use of whatever options are available and within our reach.
If the powers that be have chosen to move the goalposts, then it's their loss if we decide to do a bit of lateral thinking and spread some of our resources elsewhere.

The answer - buy an island ?? but they are all in someone's bailiwick.
Or just buy a very large boat and float around the world ? Which reminds me of an SF book where a whole tribe lived on an mass of linked floating reed "boats", drifting around the world, meeting up with others on different courses when the tides brought them together
