Re: Please do not believe the Newspapers

Personally not an issue to me as Texas is a big place, and I wasn't talking about the death penalty/ judicial system, just the experience in my neighbourhood in reference to my (probably unfounded)...

Re: Please do not believe the Newspapers

Thanks for this post - I read too much of the Daily Mail as I find it more up to date than the Times online. I am very scared that we are making a mistake. My biggest concern is the crime - they...

Re: Deciding what is best for my children - seems impossible!

We have just booked to go back to UK for 2 weeks in April/May, so we'll see what feelings we have then, and also see how the children get on. It's been a long time since we have been back.

Re: Deciding what is best for my children - seems impossible!

Thanks for your opinions, they really are helpful.
What preys on my mind is that although we had a comfortable life in London, we worked very very hard at the grindstone for it (like everyone else)....

Hi - I am having problems writing this post as it keeps getting too long! So I will just reduce it to the following:
Living as expats in Texas for 4 yrs, have a toddler and baby. We rent/ could buy...

Re: Moving to Houston from the UK

Hi,
I moved to Houston (Katy) last August as a trailing spouse and Mandana sums that up well in her previous post!
Things I found most difficult about the place:
1) The humidity, then the heat,...

Re: How long will it be such a mess?

Oh, and I forgot to add that you probably aren't actually depressed, just feeling a bit lost, anxious and down, so don't add that to your worries unless the feeling is really overwhelming, in which...

Re: How long will it be such a mess?

I can also empathise (read my earlier post about stay at home mum culture shock!). I have really suffered from anxiety since I arrived 11 months ago, but just in the last two weeks I have started to...

Re: Bugs and beasties?

I have to say that I don't see more than one cockroach every 3-4 months - we get the outside of the house sprayed regularly and that seems to keep them out. They are hideous - especially coming...

Bugs and beasties?

No one told me Texas was going to be like Jurasic Park. I had agreed to move before I realised what the bugs (venomous spiders)(and snakes)were like!
A seven foot alligator was sighted in my...

Re: ugh...homesick

I would have lived just around the corner from you in UK - I was 10 mins from Hampton Court. I do miss the history and architecture from UK. We are renting a house built in the late 1990s, and the...

Re: Stay at Home 'Mom' culture shock!

Thanks for your advice. I am working very hard to get out and meet friends here, and from the moment I arrived, I've joined up to local community groups - attend book clubs, movie clubs etc.......

Slingbox

Hi
Someone recommended I get myself a slingbox so I could watch UK tv if I wanted to. Does anyone here in USA use one, and if so, how do you rate it?

Re: Stay at Home 'Mom' culture shock!

djb1000 - thanks! I think 'steely facade' is the term I've been looking for, and I think you have a good understanding of what I mean. I have been trying to describe it to my friends back in UK, and...

Re: How Much Do You Spend on Groceries Each Week?

$250 or more - for three of us - mostly organics, fresh breads, good juices, ingredients for homemade ('scratch' made!) meals.
I don't do coupons as I don't seem to eat the food they offer. Coupons...

Re: Stay at Home 'Mom' culture shock!

Don't joke!
But on a serious note I'm really missing 'normal' people. I've been out and about socializing with various groups and neighbors - and while there are one or two people who are fun...
