Re: Margaret Thatcher is dead

There is still far more community in the UK than there is in the bland modern housing estates in Australia.

Re: Margaret Thatcher is dead

All governments overspend, we'll agree on that. Whether that is the fault of the economic model or the problems caused by, or the incompetence of, various chancellors we can debate another time.

Re: Margaret Thatcher is dead

All governments have ran debt since the 60s, I agree. That doesn't mean the current position cannot be largely blamed on Brown for making the situation significantly worse. It is the rate of increase...

Re: Margaret Thatcher is dead

The fact that the debt may still be increasing doesn't make it any less a Labour created issue or make the spend under Labour any less acceptable or less crazy. The scale just means the Coalition...

Re: Margaret Thatcher is dead

For the sake of accuracy you don't compare an average over 10 years with a 2 year figure, especially when comparing economics and its various cycles..

So again for accuracy's sake, I will compare...

Re: Margaret Thatcher is dead

I agree about the Tony Blair comment. Thatcher once responded with "Tony Blair", when asked what her greatest legacy was. She knew she had killed socialism in UK politics.

However, Thatcher had...

Re: Margaret Thatcher is dead

In its existing state, the economy was finished, everyone knew that (except maybe Callaghan). The majority of the country could not go on subsidising, to the tunes of billions of pounds, union...

Re: Margaret Thatcher is dead

I take my queue from the likes of Vaclav Havel and Lech Walesa who were full of praise for Thatcher for her support ensuring that the pressure was kept on Russia and for supporting Gorbachev. Or...

Re: Margaret Thatcher is dead

I would argue that the policies of the Unions and the previous Labour government were already ruining families across the nation.

Anyone who remembers the late 70s should remember what an...

Re: Gillard announced Sept 14 election.

Now who is believing the press. The labor party likes to make the claim about Swan being one of the best treasurers in the world. Its nonsense. I remember the same thing used to be said about...

Re: Gillard announced Sept 14 election.

People dont need brainwashing to see clearly that Gillard has been an appalling leader, both of the party and the country.

There are good reasons Mark McGowan told her not to come to WA for the...

Re: Travel upgrades - Do they happen?

I wrote to Emirates 2 years ago to tell them that I would be in mid-air with my wife on my way to Paris on the anniversary of my wedding. I asked them if an upgrade was possible as a surprise.

Re: Britain: an economic train wreck

Great idea. Because the years of socialist policies in Greece and Spain (and the UK) have really done a lot for economies in those countries and across Europe.

The banks are an easy target in...

Re: Retitled: England - riots

France and Greece have had very similar problems in the not too distant past.

The problems in the UK just highlight what many have said for the last 10 years. Labour's waste, economic...

Re: Those Nasty Met Coppers are at it again.

What utter nonsense. I would be surprised if even 1% of those thugs had ever set foot inside White Hart Lane. You don't see thousands of black youths at a Spurs game I can tell you.

But anyone...

Re: Aussie's take over British pub

1. Carlton Draught - what an appalling drink. I used to think Fosters was shite til I met the Carlton brews. No wonder it has to be so bloody cold so you can't taste how bad it really is.

Re: Aussie's take over British pub

lol sounds like they have doubled the price to me.

Can still get decent roasts for 3 - 4 pound in many pubs in the UK.

Re: Things that are actually cheaper in Australia than they are in Britain

What. You must have been shopping in the wrong places in the UK then.

Any wine that is sold cheap over here tastes like crap. Compared to the good cheap Spanish and Chilean wine readily...

Re: Carbon Tax: Julia Gillard a Bare Faced Liar?

The pumped storage capacity of the UK is tiny in comparison to the total power requirements so I am not sure where you get this idea. The variations in wind power are handled as any other variation...

Re: Carbon Tax: Julia Gillard a Bare Faced Liar?

Oh how naive. Australia is the worlds biggest coal producer, and this tax will have no effect whatsoever on those inefficient Chinese 'orrible brown coal power stations.

Re: Australia in bid to lure UK workers

I would think it would be the opposite. Boring people are quite happy doing nothing and so don't get bored.

Therefore anyone who says they never get bored is probably boring.

Re: The mining tax

Labour, whether it be UK or Australia, have no other policies than to tax and spend. And no good ever comes of it. It's what you get if you are stupid enough to vote in a Labour government.

So...
