Britains better off without a military, save heaps of money that could be better spent elsewhere. No ones going to invade the UK except illegal immigrants, Britains military is only used to fight Americas wars anyway , Let argentina have the falklands and relocate the few sheep farmers to New zealand.

Chip on shoulder? issues? The original post alludes to military might.
Now here is my point,it is not the military which make Britain a great collection of different countries.
In fact I would disown my children if they joined the armed forces. I did not bring my children up to be fodder for politicians.
If anything I would sympathise with the nationalists in Ireland during a conflict with the British Army.
I have no worries about the future in the UK and find it ironic that it is the concern of many a Godzoner.
It seems to me that this site has now to many low grade Thatcherites who are morphing into redneck Aussies.
I'm delighted you're there and I'm here

The last wars the west were involved in (Serbia, Iraq, Afghanistan) were fought with amazing air power. That power won a battle but failed to win the peace. The peace has to be won on the ground.
UK Budget cuts are affecting every level of public service. I hope the damage is not so great as to leave a bureacracy that fails to deliver much let alone value for money. Savings have to be made but my fear is that Cameron is sending Britain straight back to recession.
Nuclear capablity needs to be maintained. The worlds largest and the worlds most populous countries are not what I would describe as stable democratic economies. A deterrance is needed. Bear in mind though that Russia and NATO came very close to nuclear war in 1983. There is a fantastic documentary on ABC iView about it.
Maybe a politician in Britain might be brave enough to raise taxes enough to cover the reality of the nations needs.

And in this case, all they were doing were discussing options. Far from redneck behaviour.
What do the people who you grew up with think of the chattering classes - especially now you have become one yourself?!
EDIT - notice how 747 Kevin now has 777 posts to his name...?

Ah yes. Every simple politicians motto is that they will cut waste and make savings with efficiencies. They then go to departments and say cut. The department then looks at it and cuts 10% of jobs. Politician comes back when department cannot deliver services and information needed. Department then gets money back. Public servants are paid redundancy and then paid to come back.
Simplistic politics like this cause bad governance, waste and a public service good people do not want to work in. The public then do not get what they pay their taxes for and everyone suffers because of the simplicity of the media politician voter mindset.

And now the unions are adding to the crisis. Supported by the treacherous tossers who got the UK into the mess that it's in in the first place

Yeah, the unions aren't helping our country to do what it has to do. It all harks back to the 70s/early 80s - everything is made so much worse. So it looks like the coalition government is going to have to ringfence the military and policing. But not such a bad thing, IMHO.
