Heaven help the UK......

.......because it's military will no longer be able to.
A once great nation is brought to it's knees
This is Gordon Brown's fault
The military has sacrificed so much for their nation and this is how they are rewarded
I really fear for the UK's future

It's a shame but at the end of the day all the UK really needs is a couple of Trident nuclear subs and a clear message "f**k with our sovereign territories, and that includes the Falklands and we'll vaporize your cities".

Don't worry yourselves guys. Some of us are doing quite nicely. It is after all a vastly superior place than Australia in spite of all its faults.
In my experience the international Daily Express and the negative nature of the Uk press allow Aussie residents that self delusionary experience.
Enjoy your sausage sizzzle.

Actually, IMO, they should take the total opposite approach. Trident isn't relevant to British military requirements, in either the current conflict and probably the next, which is what they should be planning for.

Trident, in purely military terms, should be scrapped and replaced with more boots on the ground.

I quoted an article in the Daily Telegraph - an internationally respected UK broadsheet.

Your attitude is what enables governments to get away with this kind of shit.

Nonsense. I have always supported unilateralism. You don't even live here.. The Telegraph is not particularly informative or unbiased.
As I said back to your sausage sizzle. Have a look at the quality of politicians in Australia.

Why are you trying (as always) to make this Australia v UK?

I certainly wasn't.

Nobody even mentioned Australia, this is nothing to do with Oz it`s about the possible reduction of UK armed forces. Why do you even bother replying if you are unwilling to comment on the actual subject matter? Im very pleased that you are alright - it must be reassuring to everyone on here to know that you are doing well and Im sure we will sleep soundly tonight for knowing that . It just goes to show no matter where you are in the world there is always one smug self satisified Im alright Jack! Actually no I`ll be honest and say I couldn`t give a flying fart about you being ok - the cutting back of the Armed Forces however is of concern to me and the many friends I have who are employed by MOD in one form or another. You don`t have have to live in the UK for it to concern you - though you`d think that fact that you do live there it would be more of a concern.

I'm going to be picky about the article.

There wasn't an RAF during WWI

Well, not until 1st April 1918. Just saying.

I think it is terrible that we are shrinking our Armed Forces at the moment. Whilst still expecting them to be able to have a presence throughout the world in conflict zones and British territories. I say cut the bureaucrats not the Armed Forces.

Spot on about the boots on the ground. But without Trident Great Britain loses all its international clout, that's why we still have a seat at the UN security council.

Trident is a political/diplomatic tool and should not be paid for by the military budget. I remember the cuts in defence budgets for Trident years ago.

The new aircraft carriers will take on a lot of the work of the RAF and cuts were always on the cards for this. There were a lot of arguments against the carriers a few years ago about the costs involved and I can see now this was right.

The military budget is now hostage to the carrier program and Trident.

There should only have been one carrier and the balance spent on the 3 more new Astute submarines instead. The carriers (without aircraft) are about 1.4 Billion Pounds and the Astutes about 700 million.

The Subs would, in my opinion, be much cheaper to arm than an aircraft carrier. Each of the 35 aircraft will be about 100 million so each carrier will actualy cost about 5 billion pounds.

This is another major Labour cockup. They spend money like it's water and leave it to others to tally the books.
