The pumped storage capacity of the UK is tiny in comparison to the total power requirements so I am not sure where you get this idea. The variations in wind power are handled as any other variation in the system demand, by an increase somewhere else in the supply chain. In fact the fluctuations caused by non-firm generation of electricity from wind turbines are not noticeable above the normal rises and falls in demand on the system.

I thought this article was quite well written though and it's interesting how peoples political (and often religious) persuasions color their thoughts on the science.

I collected a few of the names that "deniers" were calling those who accept AGW on a few blogs: (cut 'n paste):
hobo plonker, ecotard liar, homo superbus (arrogant man), Met Office's "scientists", idiot trolls, sicko odd ball comi,c, Baa Baa. Run along now Iam, keep up with your flock, blinkered homo centric fantasists, eco-fascists, you trolls, Stalinist elite, Global Warming fanatics, fools, lobotomy drug addicted climate change wallies, The AGW cabal groupthink, the climate trolls on the blog, Idiot Shylock, mendacious, self-satisfied, idiot watermelons,
It's interesting that this sort of infantile name-calling seems to be almost exclusive to them, not the "accepters".

I've come to think that if AGW is actually happening we'd be better off spending all that money in adapting to the consequences rather than making token and mostly illusory cuts in carbon emissions.
Population is the key and until that elephant is addressed emissions are going to increase year on year. Period.

Frankly you could stick them up in the NW corner and even if they blew up, nobody would notice*. Make them breeders and the fuel supply would last for thousands of years. Its insane that Oz, with its Uranium mines, doesn't get them built yesterday. Strategic thought, they've never heard of it.
*except for those in Broome, and really, who cares?
