Moving back to the UK from California.....relative cost of living?

This post is really about cost of living. I've been away from the UK for long enough I'm out of touch with the reality of cost of living there.

After all the effort to make it to US citizen...

Re: PR to citizen - how long?

My time from N400 submission to Civics to Oath was very fast. Less than 2 months altogether

I'm in the Los Angeles area.

N-400 application. Attorney or not?

Had a quick search for previous threads and nothing jumped out at me.

I've just hit the 5-year mark on my green card and keen to move forward and look down a passport before Trump decides Scottish...

Re: J1 to H1B - tax treaty question

Checking in.

PM me if yo have questions. I only have my experience, but it seems broadly similar to yours.

In my case the IRS's unofficial (over the phone) analysis was that because I came back...

Re: hits home

Just you wait until Saturday when Cal stuff your lot and you'll really be ready to go.

Just kidding, I agree with you 100%. 10 years here and still can't get my head around the gun thing.

Re: Employment offer 'At will' wordings

Like you, when I first started my job in California I was quite bemused by the whole at-will thing. Made me feel quite insecure.

In reality, since then I've survived two large-scale RIFs where...

Re: Irvine, California?

Agree 100% with this. I live in Thousand Oaks to the north of LA which is very similar to Orange County in many ways (a wealthy, materialistic suburb). I struggled through my first year with no...

Support our troops.....I don't get it

Anyone else find the ubiquitous pro-military attitude a little weird sometimes?

Got into a bit of a situation the other day when I intimated that I don't really give a damn about the troops or...

Re: O-1 to EB1/2 - any success stories?

I have done this.

I took the intermediary step of changing to H-1B to avoid the restrictions on travel.

In my case everything went straight through without any trouble.

Re: Is it possible to transition from an O-1 or P-1 visa to permanent residence statu

I started with O-1 then actually switched to H-1B to ease the process of transition to PR. This was to avoid certain restrictions on travel during the adjustment period, something you need to...

Re: US Citizenship: pros and cons?

Sadly very true.

As a physicist (and, I'd like to think, a pretty good one) in the event of World War 3 the US would arguably be better off locking me in a secret bunker working on horrible new...

Re: US Citizenship: pros and cons?

That's where my head is at too. Just trying to figure out if I'm missing something since I have met a few foreigners over the years who have chosen not to become citizens despite living here for...

US Citizenship: pros and cons?

(I assume this conversation has been done many times before, but the search function didn't turn up anything obvious.)

As I understand it I'm about 4 months out from being able to begin the...

Re: US security clearances

Just checked in to find a feistier discussion than I expected.

If clearances can potentially be obtained without renouncing citizenship that is encouraging.

I'm not sure I'd want to give it...

US security clearances

I've been looking at positions in the aerospace engineering sector and some, if not most, of them require eligibility for US security clearance in the job description.

I'm a bit concerned about...

Re: O1 to GreenCard - Timing / Cost Guide

I went through it all without trying to change jobs, so I can't answer those questions, but it took about 6 months IIRC.

As above I more or less recycled the original O1 portfolio of evidence. The...

Re: Boyfriend on an O1, moving to San Francisco..

Switching from O1 to H1b is advantageous for travel freedoms when applying for the GC.

I'm not married so I can't comment on the pros and cons for dependent visas.

Re: Boyfriend on an O1, moving to San Francisco..

Re: 01 visa interview-help

Shouldn't be too much of a problem. I expect you had to put together a portfolio of evidence in support of your O1 application. Presumably you are familiar with all the material in that package. When...

Re: Quit job on H1b - what to do re visa?

What usually happens to me is on my next trip to the US, either on VWP or on a new visa, the border agent will look at the old visa and stample it with "CANCELLED WITHOUT PREJUDICE" in massive black...

My first trip to the states was when I was 17, also visiting extended family.

I had exactly the same experience - was thrown in the secondary inspection tank for a couple of hours while my aunt...
