Re: issed off looking for work

I can very much sympathise with all IT people without a job at the moment - particularly in Perth where we've settled. I've been in that boat now for 7 weeks and it's getting more and more difficult...

Re: Transferring money UK to AUS

I've used HiFX and Ozforex which were both good in my opinion. THe one downside is the crappy rate these days. I changed all our money over in November and got a very good rate.

Re: Scotland or Austraila?

Ok - we get the point - Oz TV is crap. :sneaky:

And??

Didn't you realise the TV was crap BEFORE you got here?! Who travels half way around the globe to sit and watch the telly?

Word of...

Re: Flight hunting

Yes - that's what I meant - Cathay Pacific. I'd assumed you'd booked directly with the airline. Are you new immigrants emigrating for the first time?

Re: GETTING AUS MORTGAGE

So anyway, looking forward to moving into our new house. The mortgage rates are pretty favourable at the moment - and no doubt they'll come down again soon.

Re: GETTING AUS MORTGAGE

We went through several options before settling on one. But no, it's not an offset account - though we are free to make additional payments at any point without being penalised.

Cheers,

Re: Scotland or Austraila?

I'm in Perth - and I'm a software engineer. I earn more here than I did in Edinburgh.

So maybe Sydney is different from Perth when it comes to wages, or maybe things have changed since you worked...

Re: Scotland or Austraila?

Yes that is a shame. Speaking personally, the latest measures from the govt have actually helped us get on the property ladder - and in my opinion the housing market is declining slightly here still....

Re: Scotland or Austraila?

That's a bit of a generalisation though - yes certain things are more expensive here - but others are cheaper. Take the house I've just bought here - a 3 year old 4x2 villa with ducted air con,...

Re: Scotland or Austraila?

That was also one of our main drivers for leaving the UK.

I've just come off the phone with my sister in Perth, Scotland who tells me it's -3C right now - and in fact the coldest winter for a LONG...

Re: GETTING AUS MORTGAGE

I just thought it would be worth mentioning my recent experience of getting a mortgage with ANZ for a property in Tapping, Perth.

As first home buyers - IN OZ - we are getting a $14k first home...

Re: Flight hunting

Did you book online? If so, give Cathay Pacific a call and explain you are a new immigrant - they may have a double-baggage allowance service for new immigrants. I know Emirates do this - but you...

Re: GMTV - Cottesloe?

Just what the world needs - another grammar bully! And anyway - Smarty Pants - it's "advise" and not "Advise". We don't put capital letters in the middle of sentences where I come from.

Cheers,...

Re: Feeling the stress cant find tenants!!

Funny you should mention that - my wife was suggesting the exact same thing this avo! It's probably frowned upon by the PM - but they never show their faces around here as long as the rent's paid on...

Re: GMTV - Cottesloe?

Anyway, my wife and I decided not to bother with it next year! And thanks to this thread, she's told me to tone down my accent when around any women ;)

Re: Feeling the stress cant find tenants!!

We're in the same boat - although we are in north Perth. We are liable for our rental until September 09, and move out on January 30. We are trying not to worry as apparently there is an influx of...

Re: Help moving to Perth Jan 09

We booked a holiday home for 4 weeks while still in the UK, and managed to secure our current rental within two weeks. It was a bit of a worry as we had to go and look at loads of grotty places that...

Re: GMTV - Cottesloe?

Hmmm - our family was there this year. We didn't give anyone any "crap" and most of the pushy twats were older teens / early twenty-somethings and they weren't Scottish.

We just wanted the folks...

Re: Rental terminology

Yep - I've just broken my rental lease in Tapping - the reason being we found a house for sale with a price ticket that was just too good to miss out on. We're now responsible for the costs of...

Re: Flight hunting

Yes - I can recommend paying the extra to get a seat for your infant! We did this and can't imagine how tough it would have been had we not done so.

Another tip I always give, for what it's worth...

Re: cheapest way to ship out 6 boxes?

Don't bother with Whites & co - we used them to ship 13 boxes and it took 4 and a half months before we got our boxes - which funnily enough was 2 days ago (so too late to get the Christmas...

Hey guys,

For anyone moving to Perth in Jan/Feb 09 who is keen to secure a long-term rental in the northern suburbs - specifically Tapping (near Joondalup) then we are breaking our rental...

Re: Rental options? Hitting my head against the wall!!

I've mentioned on a couple of other posts that our rental will be available from January 30 2009 - as we are breaking out of our rental to move into a bought house.

It's a 4x2 in Tapping, one of...
