Re: social insurance number-how long

MOST people get their SIN number in 10 minutes - after filling out a simple form they walk away with the number.

However, don't bank on it. In my case, it took 4 weeks to get a SIN number, as the...

Re: Applying for and getting a job in the UK while in Canada

When we decided to go back, I started applying for jobs from Canada. However, even though we had only been out of the UK for a few months, it was really hard to get agencies to take me seriously...

Re: We Love England!

Good for you. Best of luck with the move back. We left after 4 months.

Actually, you'll get a decent exchange rate now for your CAD$ that you are making in the house sale!

Re: Another reason I love being back home

Lucky timing, too. Yesterday was such a gorgeous day in London - and today is looking good, too. I hope you are having fun!

Re: Returning home, having left in 1966

I am very sympathetic to your situation and did not think you were coming here to jump on the benefits train. Nor is the economic downtown your fault. But the economic downturn started before you got...

Re: Returning home, having left in 1966

The UK job market is tough at the moment... and likely to be so for the foreseeable future. Sorry to hear your dilemma. I guess if you are not picky, you may find something easier!

I'd look into...

Re: Do you think a different area would be good.

Well... I used to think I hated London. Then I went to Toronto. Then back to London, because that's where I could get work.

I have been surprised to find that I love London now (with its flaws). I...

Re: heart sinking day

I feel for you. I never *hated* Canada when I was out there, but I know the feeling about the jobs and feeling that Canada is somewhat backward in many ways. I also know about missing the old life....

Re: Don't Trash the UK!

It's an interesting view - and one we held before we left the UK... .

Once we came back to the UK, we realised what a good place it is. Sure, it has it's problems, but so does everywhere. There...

Re: Rental market UK (esp with animals)

Not regarding animals, but you should note this:

If you don't have a job and don't have a credit rating, you may struggle to find something unless you are able to cough up a lot of dough in...

Re: Is there anything you do like/will miss?

I thought Starbucks in the UK did Chai lattes? I am sure a colleague of mine was addicted to them - that was about 2-3 years ago.

Just checked www.starbucks.co.uk - they do Tazo Chai Latte in the...

Re: Is there anything you do like/will miss?

So far, I miss nothing in Canada. Sure, the Sunset Grill in Toronto did some great scrambled eggs and good prices, but I can whip them up myself... Can't think of anything that Toronto has that...

Re: Why am I so unhappy here? Should I go back?

Hello there...

First of all, let me say: I know how you feel.

Second of all, be prepared: There will be a lot of people on here (maybe even the majority) who will tell you that you have not...

Re: Anyone from Northern Ireland every returned or considered it?

Well said! :-) The grass is green enough in the UK for me. A little greener in N. Ireland than London - but maybe we will sort that out in a few years. ;-)

Re: Returning home, having left in 1966

Sounds to me like you had a lot of ups and downs. We had a rough 4 weeks - but now a job for me and a flat are sorted out. But the fact is that it is tough to settle/re-settle anywhere in the...

Re: what if !!!

Tricky one. When I asked my husband just now, he said, "No, it is not worth the hassle and the money." He suggested going on a long holiday instead.

I have to confess, I tend to agree with him....

Re: now your back !!!!

I know this was not directed at me... but the line that tillysmum posted is pretty much my view about returning to the UK... It was the right decision for us thus far - but there are challenges. For...

Hi wiltshire...

I have not lived in Oz... but I emigrated to Canada with the OH back earlier in the year. We stuck it out 4 months and went back to the UK. A lot of people told us to give it...

Re: CAKE

I believe it depends on the cake and the airline.

A friend of mine tried to take a home-made Christmas cake once. Because of liquid (alcohol content), it was not allowed on the plane(?) But the...

Re: To clean or not to clean, that is the question

Wow! I am impressed. So it's slightly more in terms of hours than part time, but still. Let us know what happens. Good luck again!

Re: To clean or not to clean, that is the question

Good luck, Donna.

Out of curiousity - is the 14K pro rata - i.e. 7K in your part time case, which would mean 14K as a full time person? Or would it be 28K full time?

Just trying to get an idea...

Re: What have we done?

The decision of whether to go back or not is always a tough one - especially since it is not easy to identify WHY someone wants to go back. Obviously most people will run into initial struggles when...
