I just applied as a new applicant. I was working and buying a house etc, I also sent them some info on my credit history that I brought from the UK and that was sufficient.

Yes, I applied and received both an Amex and Visa card within weeks of moving here. I did not have an Amex in UK. Visa issued a small credit limit but were happy to incerease it after a few months.
