Have bought a new car (well 2003) so called the insurance and it will be 50% more because it is a newer car and a popular model so the premiums are higher
Should have just hung onto to the old one!

I know what you mean, insurance seems strange over here. I checked how much it would be for a new Camry and Celica. Then looked at an 1989 Mercedes 560SL sports car which is worth the same as a new Camry and found the 560SL would save me $500/year on insurance. Guess which one I bought !! Ok I admit I always wanted the SL anyway......

Hi - new to this forum - desparately trying to read through the many threads on here - great info and chat everyone !!
What would you say is an average car insurance premium ? I know that's a bit like 'how long is the proverbial piece of string? '.
So, for example - insurance for an average, couple-of-years-old, saloon ? I've heard quotes from about $750 up to $2000 a year - that's a big difference - I would pay about £280-300 in the UK for being a boring, no recent crashes, kind of person.
Someone has mentioned newer cars are alot more ? Is that 'newer' or 'brand new' ? (Like the UK presumably, and we have never been able to afford a brand new car here ! )
We are looking at Alberta - Calgary ish.
Got loads of other questions - but will try and pick up on other related threads if I can .

An engineer (49 year old) I worked with who moved Ottawa who said his car insurance for his 4 year old Nissian Sentra jumped to $5400 from $1000 when he moved to the city.
We recently moved back to rural England and have similar cars(Ford Mondeo & VW TDI) as we had in Canada. Were were paying $2200 now we pay £370 for 2 cars.(we live in the sticks in Oxfordshire)
Expect to pay double for your car insurance in Canada. For the first few years you most likely be treated as a new driver. Whatever a 17/18 year old pays in the UK do not be suprised to pay those size of premiums.
I hope this helps you.

For most Brits, ING seem to be the best company to go with...it's just a matter of shopping around with the different brokers.

If they do in Canada, you could always do a dummy quote for a car in the location you want to move too. That may help you, especially as you said being under 21.
I am sure that on TV in Ontario that there was a programme about car insurance costs being so high. I believe they were talking about Newfoundlands and an under 21 was paying silly money like $8000/yr. Also the programme said 1 in 5 drivers were not insured in some areas.

I was told I had no Canadain driving experience even though I had 13 years in the UK thats why I had to pay $3600 in the first year and it did drop to $2200 after a year.
