In my experience its best to get them to send it over to an Aussie Bank Account, they will transfer it to Aussie Dollars at a preferential exchange...

I suggest that your friends should have a holiday in Cyprus, perhaps renting a flat for a few months before going into too great a depth about the possibilities of moving there.

Public transport..ie buses exist...after a fashion! I would not put much faith in it. The best service is to and fro the airports from the main cities which is becoming popular.
