I had an 8 hour stopover in February and used the Aiports first class lounge in Terminal 1 at gate 108. There's also a business class lounge at gate 112.
You get 4 hours for £40. They have showers and free food and drink along with massage chairs and a sleeping room.
The bonus with this lounge is that you can smoke in it upstairs if that's your thing.

I did not travel through Dubai with kids (only through Singapore and Bangkok where the staff was most helpful), but it might (just) be a shameless get in front of the line free ticket. It won't cost anything to ask an attendant if they could help you get through. And if someone gets pissy about it, smile, show them your middle finger and mutter something like "up yours". You will never see them again anyway

A lot of people flying into Dubai use the Marhaba service (there's another one too but apparently not as good) https://www.marhabaservices.com/index.aspx. They're great, they meet you at the plane with a golf buggy, cart you to a waiting lounge and provide you with water, dates, sweets etc, while they do your immigration and luggage. Then they whisk you straight through to your waiting taxi, bus or whatever. Not really expensive and worth every cent (especially with a tribe of kids in tow).

Should of flown Singapore Airlines, And through Singapore, as they have a hotel in all terminals and is a better airline.
