Re: Do I need to get an ESTA ?

That is not stated in the original post. You are answering a question that was not asked.

Re: Do I need to get an ESTA ?

Nope. If Stevie is on a visa, it will [ETA: usually] have a timeout period. 'Permanent Residence' is more commonly referred to as a Green Card, which is not a visa. Even that needs renewing every...

Re: Moving to MA, drivers licence/ insurance

Re: Social Security before L1 visa?

gee, I don't know why you're having such a hard time with this. You keep making claims that are not applicable to the circumstance I was in. And besides, the question being answered was whether the...

Re: Social Security before L1 visa?

There was an implied, but apperently uninferrable, 'and I had no record of it' with that 'forgotten.

Re: Social Security before L1 visa?

You can;t even get a previously-issued SSN re-issued to you, because you've forgotten it. (I tried).

Re: Looking to work as college lecturer in US - Need help!

An International School may be willing to sponsor a visa, for an in-demand subject. A regular US school won't want to know. (MrsMe is a qualified UK teacher with a doctorate, and getting relicensed...

Re: Offset Mortgages

There's also less need for them here -- mortgage interest is a deductible.

Re: California Driving Licenses

Likewise for MA. IIRC took theory test

Re: Recommended bank accounts

FWIW before the move here I happened to have a citibank account. Citibank UK and citibank US are completely separate entities and there's no advantage gained from having a UK account. (we went with...

Re: That time of year Tax Question - UK Mortgage

You may deduct the mortgage interest for your *residence*.

You may include the mortgage interest for your non-residences in any P/L accounting of their rental income.

Re: Credit card application without employment.

Same here. After about 3 months with a secured card we started getting 'you're pre-approved' spam. Just don't go nuts opening those new accounts, because each one dints your credit for a bit.

Re: Top relocation tips

You need to register in the UK as a non-resident landlord, so you don't get tax deducted by the letting agent (you are using an agent aren't you). You will need to file UK tax return declaring...

Re: Into SFO on an L1

L1 visa goes through the 'visitor' line. Sadly you can't use the new automated machines that citizens, LPRs and non-first-time ESTAs can use.

It was pleasant using them as an LPR for the first...

Re: Airport Security

For SFO from the LHR you clear immigration and customs at SFO and then recheck your bag immediately. Then go back through security.

Some out-of-US airports have their own little bit of US to...

I recommend having them manage it ongoing for 10%. Then when the gutters leak or washing machine breaks, you don't have a problem. They should also do regular inspections to make sure the place is...
