The good news is, if you miss your connection, United will stick you on the next available flight free of charge. The bad news is SLO will probably only have one or two flights a day to SFO so you may have a pretty horrendous layover in the airport. I'm flying to OKC a lot at the moment. I missed my last connection from SFO to Monterey by 5 minutes. There was a 12 hour wait for the next flight. I ended up taking a 3 hour bus ride home!
Oh and international is one thing, they can make up the time and it won't have such a knock on if it arrives a little late. The flight from SFO to SLO will be one of their regional hopper flights. They won't hold it.
Thought you had to go through immigration...collect your luggage and clear customs at the first airport when you land in US. From then on it's an internal flight with no immigration or customs.

Yeah, I dunno, I've never flown an international flight followed by an internal flight. That's why I asked the question.

You do.

Unless coming from a pre clearance country.

Even if you are transiting the US you still have to clear immigration and customs at the first airport before boarding a flight to another country.

Yeah, I knew you had to clear both immigration and customs, but wasn't sure if you had to physically had to collect your bags. The TSA can open an unattended bag,and do so regularly so it goes without saying that customs could do the same. That's why I wasn't sure if you physically needed your bag to clear customs.

At SFO it was one customs card per family and when I used SFO they insisted that if there was a UCS in the family all went through the USC line. In fact the first time they came and pulled me out the non USC line and took me to the USC one where my wife was. Loudly saying "You're in the wrong god dam line"

For SFO from the LHR you clear immigration and customs at SFO and then recheck your bag immediately. Then go back through security.

Some out-of-US airports have their own little bit of US to clear immigration and customs there (for instance Vancouver and Ottawa). Such flights are exceptional and you'll arrive at a domestic terminal.

90 minutes is tight, but as United let you do that, it's on them if it goes awry -- and it certainly can at SFO. If this happens go to the service desk opposite to where the luggage recheck is and get that sorted before rechecking luggage.

SLO is a nice vacation spot -- enjoy.

Should be fine.

SFO is quite compact. 90 minutes is a good amount of time. I usually give myself 60 minutes connection time for domestic flights and that is excessive.

When do you arrive? There are 3 flights a day to SLO.

The other thing is that you are close enough to drive to SLO from SF. 4 hours drive if you do miss that particular flight.

United are a shite airline. However, every time I've missed a connection, and I've missed a load with them this year, they've rebooked me on the next flight and texted me to let me know my new details before I've even reached the ticket desk. In that regard, they are very good.

It's got nothing to do with the TSA. It's USCBP, and they can't open TSA locks. You have to collect your bags.

You're confused. 60 minutes is a ridiculously tight for international to domestic.

And the additional flghts to SLO are all well and good as long as they have spare seats on the day.

US pre-clearance is done at all Canadian airports with US flights, plus Dublin, Shannon and Abu Dhabi and certian Carribean airports. There are talks of adding other places but nothing concrete yet as far as I know.

Not all Canadian airports with US flights have pre-clearance.

Victoria, BC has US flights but no pre-clearance.

I don't think Kelowna has pre-clearance either and they also have US flights.

"Victoria International Airport does not currently have a U.S. Pre-Clearance Facility so travellers will clear both U.S. Customs and Immigration upon arrival into the United States."

Eight Canadian airports do which I would guess is most of the ones with services to the US.
