When I came to the end of my 457 visa I just went to the local DIMIA office and picked up a holiday visa to cover a few months of travel. You can get this without having to leave Australia.

Went to a differen PO where they did have a clue and had heard of a International Postal Voucher. I ended up enclosing 4 just to be safe as it contained two reference check...
