Re: Its a shame..

They were. But it was the priests who preached the doctrine of original sin, that these girls were guilty (even if they'd been raped), and so were their babies, because they inherited their mothers'...

Re: Authors?

Not so crazy really. I used to work for a publisher in the UK and they used printers in India. The stock was sent to Singapore and despatched from there to customers back in the UK.

Over here,...

Re: Gibraltar

Gib does get subsidies from the EU Structural Fund for small businesses - €5.8 million in the last 7-year period. That's quite a lot for a smallish town full of very profitable businesses.

Of...

Should you have had to do it then, after 15 years in Marbella? :sneaky:

Re: Gibraltar

The MEP for Gibraltar (bizarrely it comes into the South Devon constituency) is very concerned about what would happen if the UK votes to leave th EU. Firstly of course, he would lose his job.

Re: Gibraltar

Just to make it clear, I don't take Spain's side on the issue of Gibraltar, especially not the attitude of the present government. I know they are trying to make trouble. I also know why the...

Re: Gibraltar

They are moaning about the ones that are smuggled into Spain, by Spaniards, as you well know. The lost tax revenue runs into millions.

Re: Gibraltar

The Rock is British, there isn't any doubt about that. But the Treaty of Utrecht did not include the land where the airport now is, nor the territorial waters.

What I would like to see, is for...

Re: Gibraltar

If sales were really down by 2,000,000,000 packets, every man, woman and child in Spain would be buying 40 less packets this year than last. Not very likely, even in this land of nicotine...

Re: Gibraltar

Exactly.

But there is a good reason why Gibraltar doesn't want to join the Customs Union: they just love all those tourists!

Re: Gibraltar

The difference is that the UK (Andorra) is in the EU Customs Union and you can bring in a bootload of booze and fags from another member state and claim it's for personal use.

Gibraltar prefers...

Re: Turning colder...

Can you see the Sierra Nevada where you live, through all those olive trees? If so, I am very envious! I've seen snow twice in five years on the Sierra de Grazalema, on the far distant horizon,...

Re: Gibraltar

I think your figures are a bit out of date Fred? Perhaps a smoker could confirm, but I think a packet is nearer €5 here now. Not that anyone pays the full price, most of the bars keep smuggled...

Re: Gibraltar

I've often thought that. Also if the price of fuel was harmonised it would stop those great long queues of people driving in to fill up their tanks.

It's not as if Gib couldn't use the extra tax...

Re: Why is Spain 25 years behind

But it's difficult to get together if you are working on Sundays! If all the shops are open, it just becomes another working day.

You're right about the growing drug problem though. It's the...

Re: Why is Spain 25 years behind

I like that Sundays are still a family day, at least where I live. There are a couple of food shops that open Sunday mornings so you can get fresh bread, but that's it. Everyone then piles round to...

Re: The Cost Of Living In Spain

Advertised price, what a joke! I only know one bar that has the price list on display. Is it a legal requirement?

Re: Turning colder...

The night-time temperature dropped to single figures here last night after a long mild spell. Sadly we don't have a woodburner, so I shall spend the next three months in M&S Heatgen thermals worn...

Re: The Cost Of Living In Spain

Wow that is cheap! We've got a bit of a price war going on in my village. A caña of beer has been €1 in all the bars since Spain converted to the euro. One bar just reopened selling draft...

Re: The Cost Of Living In Spain

You don't have to use EV for that, there is "suave" olive oil which is much cheaper and doesn't have much flavour. I don't like chips fried in EV.

I think there is a big EU subsidy for growing...
