If you're in Jubail it's easier to drive to Bahrain and have a pint, just make sure that you get customs papers for the car. Alternatively they are taxis which can take you over for about SAR 250...

Wouldn't rush into finding a place as soon as you get here, try and stay in a hotel (but depressing) or furnished apartment while you find your feet.

Yep - another colleague came in for a meeting in Bahrain earlier this month again with UAE residency, landed got charged BD20, checked back in 4 hours later.

Not sure about the BD25 coming through the airport heard from a friend, but had a Brit with UAE residency arrive yesterday and got charged BD20 left again same day, and another Brit with no GCC...

It is do-able.

Push for minimum 1 return flight each per year - this is normal to say the least.

Some ideas on costs for you

St. Chris Infants school is BD 3440 / year for 2014/2015...
