What happens to everyone's job...
If Qatar have the World Cup pulled from them?
Do you think the infrastructure plans would go on hold?
Am supposed to be going out there in august and at the point of handing my notice n in Australia.
Any expats got any gut feelings on how not having the World Cup might change the plans out there to build all this infrastructure?
Thanks
Russ

The Qatari's won't notice and will carry on. They have no plan. someone might notice that they don't need 8 stadiums, but the mega infrastructure projects, Lusail, metro, roads, mega reservoirs, iDRIS etc will carry on.

Yes the development is catalyzed by the world cup but most of the infrastructure related projects will surely continue....

Plus the Doha Expressway programme, railway to Saudi, the New Doha Airport Phase 2, the Olympic Park on the current airport site, the leisure resort near Mesaieed, the Abu Hamour drainage outfall, the new power/desal plant south of Wakra, the office blocks/ hotels being squeezed into every vacant plot...
Every day the papers announce new mega projects kicking off, which is nice if you work in construction

The construction market here is a mess , tough to make money and some of the higest costs on the planet to operate . The prices may rise with materials and a choke in the market but the Qatari's will just cancel projects to counter that.

Not really , too many players looking for work and cutting the margins , plus you have the overspill from the UAE and the usual Korean and Chinese misifits here .

What's even worse is that there is restrictive tendering conditions, well on the stuff I tendered anyhow, that all materials like steel and concrete must come from local suppliers if they are with 15% of outside market prices.
So already you get hit with a 15% premium on your materials, and trying to deal with the local suppliers is to put it mildly a complete ****ing ball ache.

We've walked away from big supply jobs of 1million m3 because we would have lost money . Concrete is not a complicated business model , everyone knows the costs and margins so if someones 30-40 Riyals lower than you they're cheating , no other way and they do cheat , short measures , sub standard materials , bribes the lot . It all happens here in abundance , it's the worst place i've operated in.
If you're trying to sell a premium product here it's difficult . A lot of procurement and commercial guys don't know shit from custard and just want the lowest price .
In the end everyone loses , especially the client but the Qatari's think they're getting a good deal but they just end up with a sub standard end product but then again they don't give a fu**
