Unfortunately the taxes and charges will probably be more than the cost of the flight, we looked at AirAsia and by the time you have added taxes and charges they were the same as everyone else :-(

You don't even need to be living in Oz to open a bank account, at least not with ANZ. We opened our first account in NZ when we visited 6 years ago, with a UK address. They gave us an EFTPOS card...

You are correct, I was thinking of when we flew into AKL, was about 11-12 hours from SIN and HKG then. We flew over BNE about half way through.
