We have done about 5 renewals/applications and yes we have left passport at Embassy

Always been returned within 5 business days

Best is 3 days, but that was in Toronto

If they expire this year, do the renewals before you start down the process

Not sure how far in advance you can renew a UK passport, but if you find you have expiry within next...

It is likely to be a L visa.
As others have said if you want to work, you have to marry and apply for EAD once you arrive in USA ( and that wilt take 60-100 days )

No travel outside US while AP is pending as AP will be denied and you'll have to start over with AP. This is what we were told last year so we delayed filing for a couple of months

H1b will not allow your wife to work, so you'll need salary to cover all your family for length of the visa

Our lawyer said absolutely no overseas travel while AP processing as it will be denied and you will have to start again.

Well if the dates remain consistent through future visa bulletin and you apply now, will be about 800 days before GC would be available for you
