Re: NZ Houses are freezing

Yes, it is unusual to need a fire in December but at the same time Christmas day on the beach isn't guaranteed . sometimes summer doesn't really begin until January, and it rains quite a lot,...

Re: NZ Houses are freezing

NZ is hot and humid for 9 months of the year? Yes, it can be both, off and on but not for 9 months. When we first visited in 2004 in December, we were huddled round a wood burning fire in Auckland....

Re: NZ Houses are freezing

I suppose if you've grown up without heating you won't feel the cold as much as Brits do. granted it doesn't get as cold as Britain, at least not in the north Island, but I don't understand the...

Re: NZ Houses are freezing

We're in a new house with double glazing and insulation, in the central north island, but the system of house building here isn't to the standard we are used to in UK.. Even the brick built ones...

Re: Best relocation areas in the UK?

I lived most of my long life in Sussex, since 1940 until 2009 with a break of 15 years overseas in between and now in New Zealand. I never experienced serious flooding in England although there were...

Re: Health care

Thank you for your reassuring account of your personal journey through the NZ health care system. It seems I've been unnecessarily concerned . I suppose it might be different in some parts of the...

Re: Health care

Thanks for clarifying that. I understand that there might be times when some treatments are not covered but it's reassuring to know that generally treatment is provided free. Hopefully I'll never...

Re: Health care

Thank you for your reply. From reading other comments it seems I'm not the only one who finds the system unclear and would like to see it written in black and white in a document. It seems that it...

Re: Health care

Are you saying that treatment for a chronic illness is completely free of charge. I understand that treatment after an accident is free but if I'm unfortunate enough to develop cancer and need...

Re: Health care

I am very confused about the healthcare system in NZ. We've been here 10 years and don't currently have insurance. We had when we first came here and the monthly fee was $270, the following year it...

Re: Any UK train drivers recently moved to NZ?

Trains are a rare animal in NZ so you might need to do some serious research into the possibilities of getting a job as a train driver here.

Re: Best relocation areas in the UK?

Ah, yes! The parent thing. Leaving your family, be they parents or children, is the hard part and I've been on both sides of the situation. My parents are now long gone and we're in NZ because our...

Re: Brits leaving in droves...apparently

Brits need to take account of healthcare costs in NZ. It's not free or low cost. Prescriptions are cheaper than UK but in UK they're free for the over 60s. If you have an accident they'll look after...

Thumbs up Re: Best relocation areas in the UK?

How nice to hear so much positivity about the UK. There will be some who will say, "Oh, but being on holiday isn't the same as living there, " and of course that's true of anywhere. We holidayed in...

Mine was a different problem to yours but it goes to show that the Pensions Office isn't interested in getting it right. That, it seems, is your /our problem. They got mine wrong for 11 years. At...

Re: Our experience moving to NZ 18 months in

I agree entirely about the work/life balance in NZ. We've been here 10 years and are retired but have a large family here and it seems to me that they all work pretty hard just to keep afloat, so no...

Perhaps it just comes down to the fact that, like you, I've seen so much of the country several times and there's rarely anything new to discover. Or maybe it's just winter!
