Re: Options to move to US

Have you spoken to your PhD supervisor? Networking is the best way to get post docs, so try and get to every meaningful conference and talk to people, many positions aren't advertised openly but...

Re: Do I have good grounds for an H1B visa application?

He's most likely to be on an MEng programme meaning he has no bachelor's degree. In the UK sciences, many undergraduate programmes have combined bachelor's and master's degrees, lasting the 3 or 4...

Re: Come Dine With Me

I was told that they get given certain amount to spend, so they can shop at LIDL or Fortnum & Mason, they make money anyway. I love the commentary though, perfect British cynicism.

Re: Inbetweeners

Skins gets so serious, when they do drugs for example it's like Trainspotting all over again, I prefer what they did on the inbetweeners, if you do drugs you end up kissing a girl who just threw up...

Re: Inbetweeners

Skins got boring to me after the first series. Inbetweeners is doing the good British thing of ending after 2 or 3 excellent series, like with Extras and the Office, as opposed to money-spinning...

Re: Inbetweeners

It's the best thing on TV right now, Episode 3 had my stomach and throat hurting from laughter.

Re: Is England expensive

Two pints of milk is 84p now? Ouch. Although 80p for a pot of yogurt is pretty good.

Re: Observing the British - it works both ways!!

Well I read it all so that's something. I thought it was clever and well written. Not too harsh either.

Re: forgetting how i used to pronounce words....

I'm gonna go for "deppow" for phonetics on how we Brits say it.

It's used for any base really, so a trucking company will have a depot, at the council where I have my summer job, the vans are said...

Re: Interesting map of the worldr

I do wonder how, apart from the Falklands, Grantham, Bournemouth and Reagan references that map is from a particularly Conservative (capital C) point of view. It's just a collection of funny sounding...

Re: Forgetting English Words

Napkin is British English too. I remember some programme on TV discussing class and how the 'French version' of a word is usually the less preferred. So it's napkin not serviette, loo not toilet,...

Re: Hilarious Expat View of life in USA

I read my previous comment over and it was meant as a light hearted criticism but now seems needlessly acerbic and moronic. I hope it's seen in the way I meant to give it, if not I'm sorry.

O so it's for the recently departed rather than a reunion then?

And to Robin, I went to a private school so we/they whatever rely on such funds. After pumping tens of thousands into the school, as...

Re: Hilarious Expat View of life in USA

Well to start off I think that describing yourself as hilarious is very unClarksonian/Gillian etc. The British wit usually involves some sort of self deprication along with a false sense of...

Re: Homecoming.

Is Homecoming a good natured celebration or is it seen as a chance to tap alumni up for cash to pay for something or other? I remember as a 6th Former taking some very elderly alums around the school...

Re: UK Degree in USA

I think it's brilliant that people give their time to help others achieve their dream, or at least become more knowledgeable about the process of immigration. A massive undertaking, such as moving...

Re: POPE BENEDICT XVI in BRITAIN

Reminds me of the pseudo-republicanism in Australia, some of them are happy with the Queen to be their head of state as they like her, not Charles when he becomes King, because he's not as popular.

Re: POPE BENEDICT XVI in BRITAIN

I was listening to running commentary of the visit on Radio 5, it was rather dull and VERY repetitive.
"Here the Pontiff arrives in the UK on the first State Visit from the Vatican"
"And he will...

Re: UK Degree in USA

13+3 years of school and university education in the UK is seen as equivalent to 12+4 years of school and college in the US. So your BSc is a Bachelor level qualification in the US too.

Re: uk degree conversion to us

Sorry I should say that's the case in the final year, if you don't get 35% in each module in other years it's retakes then it's repeating the year. In the final year they chuck you out with whatever...
