Re: Hello, 20 years in Aus!

Hi All,

Been here 21 years, and pop into the forum occasionally to check if I'm missing out on any major arguments. There were certainly a few crackers back in the day LOL.

Every 5 years or so,...

Re: Class 2 NI. What about us poor expats paying voluntary contributions?

My *very* basic understanding is that Class 2 would be if you were working full time (in UK or OZ), class 3 if you weren't. They will assume Class 3 if there are gaps in your Oz full time employment...

Re: UK National Insurance buying back missing years

Yeah, looks like a no-brainer. Which is exactly the amount of thought I like to put into these things

UK National Insurance buying back missing years

Hi All, long time no post :-)

Does anyone have any experience of doing this? I understand there is a looking 31-Jul-23 deadline for buybacks from 2006. Only just found out about it as I had...

Re: What's everyone up to for Christmas?

Well, we were booked on a houseboat on the Hawkesbury, followed by a caravan trip to the Sapphire Coast, but the Sydney outbreak may have just scuppered both of those

Re: How to tell your parents you’re moving across the world?

My mum and dad were both really supportive of our move to Oz 17 years ago. It's always just felt like a flight away to go back until this year. This is the first time I've felt the distance and the...

Re: Roll Call...

I was way more active on this site when we had just arrived here in 2003. Glad it's still going. It had some pretty heated discussions back then, and certainly a few trolls that were just out for a...

Re: VPN for BBC iplayer

I've never had much luck with VPNs or DNS redirects to access the BBC iPlayer. It's like a game of whack-a-mole. As soon as the VPN provider allocates a new UK IP addresses, the BBC iPlayer will...

Re: drinks and nite out in st ives area

Good grief. Haven’t been on this site for ages, and what is the first thing I read … night out in St Ives. It must be fate telling me to go out and get plastered.

We have lived in St Ives for...

Re: Afghan Hijackers Granted Asylum in UK

As I said, I was playing devil’s advocate. These are not necessarily my opinions or attitudes on the subject, and you should not refer to them as if they were.

This thread has a very one sided...

Re: UK Pensions and Transfers to Australia - an update ...

If it were me, I would transfer it over, but hang on until the exchange rate improves a bit! I like everything in the once place, and I would probably forget about it if I left it.

Re: Nationwide bank

I would definitely check this as most UK current accounts are only open to UK residents. There is a lot of new fraud and money laundering legislation around.

We have our UK account with smile, but...

Re: Afghan Hijackers Granted Asylum in UK

If someone hijacks a plane, does that not make them a terrorist? Presumably they are not labelled as terrorists because they were escaping a hostile regime.

As I said, I have no knowledge as to...

Re: Afghan Hijackers Granted Asylum in UK

They hijacked a plane from the Taliban from a Taliban controlled area. Off course they behaved like thugs. One mans terrorist …. etc etc.

I don’t have any knowledge about what other routes...

Re: Australias new tax rates from july 1 2006

Salaries usually quoted as “base” or “package”

Package can include a multitude of sins, including the 9% super, but may also include discretionary bonuses which may or may not be paid.

Re: Afghan Hijackers Granted Asylum in UK

Just playing devil’s advocate here, but these guys hijacked the plane in order to escape the Taliban. Presumably the same sort of people that we were allied to during the Afghan war and the same...

You need to be careful about how long you drive with your UK licence once you have arrived in Oz. In NSW, for example you have 3 months to get a license. After 3 months your UK licence will not be...

With it being “Wills” day on 7th June (perhaps a new public holiday is in order?), I was wondering how other expats have done this.

We did the following:

a) Will (who gets what)
b)...

Re: DAB in Oz?

I am not sure I buy the DAB is superior to FM thing, and I suspect a covert ploy to get everyone off FM so that the government can sell off the bandwidth.

There was an interesting...
