Re: The Ping Pong Thread

For us the house purchase when we first got to Okotoks in Canada was not the smartest move in that it was within a few weeks of arrival and we were still in the clouds so probably weren't as switched...

Re: The secret to a happy life when you're back in the UK......

I think soaps such as Eastenders & Coronation Street also have a lot to answer for- I don't watch them myself but the trailers are always full of negativity, doom & gloom, people permanently arguing...

The secret to a happy life when you're back in the UK......

....don't read the papers or watch the news! They've got a lot to answer for; reminds me of the Kevin Costner film "Field of Dreams" that had the line "Build it and they will come" but with the media...

Re: It really is mild

Watch out for February, bit of a sneaky month who got January drunk over Christmas...poor old January's still recovering.

Re: Today's thought may help you deicde ....

Very poignant. You only get one life so we owe it to ourselves to make the best of it. Money helps immensely but it can't buy happiness and you can't take it with you so use it to make you happy....

Is the UK you came back to the same one you left?

Recently passed our 1 year anniversary of being back in Blighty (1 year, 1 month) after 6 years in Canada and was pondering last night over a glass of wine what's changed in that time. Now we're not...

Re: How Did You Make The Decison To Ping Pong?

Wise words. Being content in your work has a major impact on happiness in life overall as we spend so much of our lives at work. I know it's hard to imagine but if your work life was good would you...

Re: What do you miss most about Canada?

I think the ready availability would depend on where you live in the UK. For most places they'd probably need ordering in advance.

Re: What do you miss most about Canada?

With the current weather I'd say plenty of snow ploughs and the mandatory fitting of all season tyres to all new cars sold in the UK....oh and easy access to reasonably priced snow tyres for those in...

Re: Does ALL credit history disappear ?

Usually erased in the UK after six years of no financial activity such as a bank account or credit card.

I kept a bank account and credit card here in the UK whilst in Canada for just over six...

Re: Health & Safety Grinch has stolen Christmas..

Thanks for the link, good to get things correct even if I was making light of the situation. Followed it and looks like the Beeb got the wording wrong- or it could have been me:o

Seems Christmas...

Re: Health & Safety Grinch has stolen Christmas..

Probably worth setting up a training session on how to use Christmas crackers in advance of the next work Christmas lunch. Don't forget to include the requisite hard hat and safety glasses!;)

Re: Do I have to take a test to get my UK license bac

Do you still have your old UK licence? If so you may be able to just renew it. The DVLA does allow certain foreign driving licences to be exchanged for a UK one. For example the DVLA's web site...

Health & Safety Grinch has stolen Christmas..

I was wandering through Marks & Spencers at the weekend as you do and some Christmas crackers caught my eye- or rather the notice under them did. It was something to the effect of "....blah,...

Re: will US Bankruptcy show up in the UK

It would be worth checking if the US and UK have any two-way agreements regarding financial matters as Canada and the UK do regarding interest on savings as an example.

Whilst in Canada we had an...

Re: The state of Britain according to TriBoy

Great post and well balanced. We've been back just over a year now and have found the same things as yourself.

Re: Shopping help

Try Homebase for the plant pots. Most large super stores such as Tesco and Morrisions have a bulk produce section and usually large containers of white vinegar are there.

Costco is over here now...

Re: British Passport Expiry Date

You didn't mention if your're moving back to the UK permanently or just going back to visit. As long as you arrive back in the UK before your passport expires there shouldn't be an issue.

If...

Re: Travelling with 2 passports

I'm thinking probably not. If you only had a UK passport and it had expired, the question is would they let you back into the UK on it. Mind you Canada is part of the Commonwealth so in effect a...

Re: UK...elsewhere...UK...why???

Why did you leave in the first place?
- good question, probably boredom and what we perceived to be broken Britain at that time- crime, traffic, overcrowding etc.

Where did you go to and why did...

Re: Ship everything back or sell it all?

We sold most of the furniture when we returned from Canada. As the houses in the US and Canada (probably Oz & NZ as well) are bigger the furniture and the amount of it is also bigger so you may find...
