Not sure where you're looking but many of the bigger rental buildings will take you without a US credit history. The rental market is definitely cooling a little, particularly at the luxury end.

You can no longer exchange your UK license in NY state. You now have to sit the written test, then 5 hrs compulsory class room instruction and finally the driving test.

Nearly everyone moving to NY has the exact same thought about space for guests but it comes at such a big premium that most people realize it's a luxury reserved for those living in the suburbs ;)
