Hi,

Lived in Adelaide for a couple of years and worked a good part of the state: we loved the lifestyle - lots of clubs and sports for the kids, great cycling culture, fab wines, friendly people...

Great time to come: 23-27 degrees, little wind, low humidity, time to settle in!! Locals will be in jeans and jumpers cos the blood gets thin in the summer heat and humidity.......:D

It's been a long time since I posted here, mainly because it has been a helluva busy ride.

Landed in Adelaide in April 2009, on a 475 state sponsored visa, wife and both kids...

We had same decision to make: friend in Calgary and loving it, long winter break as they work in landscape gardening: 2 weeks off suck, would be a complete shock to the system.

I would apply for it - you will find that your money starts draining from the word go: took us 2 months to find and enter a good rental (saw some 50s and 60s horror stories) at a reasonable rate...

Apologies - fora or forums (search for foreign exchange) - I personally would not give a recommendation on someone I had not used - have used HIFX and happy with their service - ozforex is mentioned...

If you check the fora, there are various names mentioned - personally, think it's all about what you ask for and barter - after all, this is the land of the deal!!!

Can recommend that route - all went through smoothly for us. Did the deal with HIFX, then on the appointed day, transferred my money to HIFX, they then transferred the money to Westpac account.

4 years for a 20% gain........what would a good interest rate pay right now in Oz compared to the UK? Especially as there may be interest rate rises coming on over here.....

Interesting point: imagine that Australia had open borders with the whole of South East Asia, no restrictions on immigration and no pre-selection of those arriving - just a bucketload of people...

Optus do a Sim card at the airport as you arrive - 20 bucks for 80 bucks value, and they do top-ups for 15 bucks, 50 bucks value or a 10 buck gives 50 minutes calling to the UK...on a mobile!!
