deary me! Well, a/ the silly kid already has a new phone, and b/ the school can hardly enforce such a daft "solution".
I think a polite letter stating some facts is in order!

well...my son just told me school has now decided that he needs to pay for half of the broken phone and in order to do that, he has to come to school on Saturday and wash cars in to raise money for that....WTF?
first the school does everything not to interfere and to let us solve the matter between us and the other parents, on request of the other parents we go to the police, who told us there is no case, the boy even got a new phone and now this...

there's only losers in this case sadly enough...
the boys were talking again, but after the whole police thing the other father has forbidden the boy to talk to my son...
It appears the mother works at the school, so maybe that has something to do with their sudden change of heart, god knows...

I would refuse..The police told the parent not to waste their time. You gave the kid another phone. He broke the rules. Tell the school to back off!
Unless ofcourse the other kid is going to be made to wash cars for breaking the rules and to pay for the other half of the phone :-)
Also what the hell is the school doing asking him to wash cars?? If they want to force him to pay half towards the phone then it would be up to you/him how you got the money.

what pisses me off is that they had emailed me saying as the phone is somewhat out of the schools jurisdiction, we suggest you contact the boys father to solve the matter....
so that's what we did, the dad obviously didn't get what he wanted out of it, but hey, that's life sometimes, and now they suddenly turn round and come up with this stupid 'solution'...
Am writing them an email now, lol...

Why don't you suggest that the relevant people (boy's parents, school officials, etc) go off to a hotel together and discuss the matter?
