My wife used to volunteer for meals on wheels in Brisbane and some of the stories she told me were mindboggling. There were able bodied families receiving these almost free meals and their houses were full of beer cans and full ashtrays. Why should they be receiving these heavily subsidised meals?
I think you are confused as to what meals on wheels is about - my understanding is it provides meals to older people and young people with disabilities who find making a meal difficult. What do you think meals on wheels is about?

That doesn't cover the increase in long-term unemployed. It's currently very easy when finding yourself unemployed to still be in that position 6, 12, 18 months later - the UK is in the middle of what really is a depression, with still many years expected to go before unemployment gets to a good level.

I would think that a charity with limited resources would not waste them on those who really didn't need it, but never having worked for the charity, I can only go by what they give as their criteria

How do you know? Not all disabilities are visible or obvious. The person your wife saw may have also been the carer, and the disabled person not seen by her. They may have been referred to the service for a reason other than a disability.

In any case, who is eligible to receive meals on wheels is not up to you, the person referring the client to QMOW obviously thought they could do with that service.

A good read which completely contradicts the opinion of some 'experts'.

Yes, it certainly reinforces what we are seeing for ourselves. Much more confidence and the feel good factor is returning. Nowhere is all good but certainly on the up.

Well Chris, the day had to come. I think you are indeed confused. I have been involved in MoW for sometime, and much as I don't want to discuss this fully, am now a recipient of them.

Tomorrow morning I intend to check this out with people I know very well, I'll do that before or after these lovely people deliver my meal to me.

I will never agree that the UK has masses of people living in poverty. The UK has no more or less problems as other FW countries-the only difference is that the UK is always analyzed this way.........but we've been over that haven't we?

I do agree though that there are a hell of a lot of people who haven't a clue how to manage their money, and that does not mean they are p..sing it away. It means what it says.

Where I draw the line on this though is the suggestion that MoW with the available resource that they have, are delivering meals to entire families and able bodied ones at that.

Categorically that does not occur!

However Chris, I have every intention of following up what you have said even if it means contacting someone in Brisbane.

MoW does not need to have the valuable service it provides diminished in this manner.

Small anecdote. My brother in the UK is a mad keen Socialist Party activist who thinks everyone should more or less get everything for free. He lives next door to a mother with 4 kids living entirely on benefits, and admitted to 'coming over a bit Daily Mail' when he found out she was spending 100 pounds a month on cable TV. It's funny if you know him
