you all prove my point no real celebs in canada. a lot of the people listed as canadian celbs i dont even know and there not really famous like proper celebs. i like the fat girl though from cape briton whatever her name is that is a true canadian celeb no one heard of. uk full of world famous people and lots of opportunity. look at wayne rooney. hes the same age as me and world famous a millionare and lives in manchester. only the uk gives people this kind of opportuntiy to be rich and famous by the time your 20. and he still lives in manchester and loves it. hes one of the boys still likes a good pint and a curry and ill bet he reads the sun to. so if its good enough for wayne its good enough for me. id give anything to be like him. bet hes never been to canada and probably doesnt even know were it is or care. no body famous want to be here. thats the truth.

He has talent, and the top employer (OK, one of the top employers) in his field happens to be located in Manchester, with little hope of relocation.

So until someone comes along with a better pay packet he stays near there

See the difference? Talent, and a large renumeration package to tie you to a location?

Theres nothing wrong with Manchester if your personal circumstances are right, but its hardly Shangri La. But then you probably think that's a massage parlour near Openshaw anyway....

I don't think you can win arguing for Canada on urban/media topics. Where Canada wins over the UK is in the lower cost of property, paying less for somewhere to live allows more money for other stuff, "stuff" being most anything except travel; people don't travel much from Canada because they tend not to have enough time off work.

That's not so. People can take time off but:

- they're not paid

- they need to be accessible by telephone and email.

Ah, so like a vacation, only unpaid and at the beck and call of work. I just cant understand why more people dont take the oportunity then....

People generally don't take vacations, it's not the custom here, so the terms and conditions related to taking them have never been an issue. It's the same with sickness, it's not customary to take time off to be ill so, for example, I worked at a client's site with a noisy case of pneumonia this past winter. Since it's the custom to turn up half dead it's never been an issue that we don't pay people to be sick.

Well , no doubt they are all "self employed subcontractors", otherwise that would be illegal.... but on the other hand, if they are self employed contractors you can hardly dictate to them how they go about taking time off....

Hell, I dont care, I just wouldnt want any innocent bystander to think this kind of thing it typical of canadian employers, who usually at least have the decency to award two or three weeks paid vacation to their employees, in addition to the ten or so government proscribed statutory holidays....

We think it unprofessional to take the statutory holidays unless they coincide with US ones.

We don't find that there's any sort of conflict with the self employed contractors, the culture of our industry is such that people don't expect to have interests of commitments that conflict with dedication to the firm.
