several seconds? The only limitation I have found with digital is the
APS sensor size limiting wide angle.

I simply found taking ordinary pictures difficult.

In common with any compact camera it is next to impossible
to frame a picture through the viewfinder and if you use the
LCD screen (a) it runs the battery down in double quick time,
(b) is unviewable in strong sunlight.

and the small plastic lens was useless.

So I went back to a real camera.

I have a Panasonic FZ7S. I am happy with it. I have no gripes about battery
life, the optical view finder can be adjusted for your eyesight. It isn't the
ultimate in compactness, it has x12 optical zoom. It is light and has excellent
real glass Leica lenses. I had a Nikon 885 that fitted in a pocket but the lens
distorted verticals and had too much red in the images.

On both my Fuji and my Kodak cheapish digital compact cameras there is a
significant delay between pressing the shutter and it taking a picture.

I haven't noticed a significant delay on either Nikon or Panasonic digital
cameras.

http://www.dpreview.com/ is a good site for independent digital camera test

LCD screens are hopeless compared to the TTL view of an SLR,
remarkably some people convince themselves an LCD is a way of taking
other than hopeful snaps!
I certianly cant see the one on my SLR in bright sun.

On my cheap Aldi one, it's about 0.6 seconds delay. Not a big deal. If I
was taking pictures of fast moving objects, I'd probably invest in a
better camera. Still, digital cameras have revolutionised the way
average people (not photographers or keen amateurs) take photographs,
though I sometimes wonder if they lose their value (thinking
holiday/personal snaps) if they are so ubiquitous.

I can see the display on my cheap Aldi one. They're absolutely fine for
people just taking snaps.

I think there's a slight delay on my Panasonic (FZ20) if I just try
to shoot it in one button-click; if I half-press the shutter button
to let it auto-set, though -- and I invariably do that -- the rest of
the operation seems more-or-less instanteous.

There's plenty of evidence on camera yahoogroups of people taking more than just
snaps.

You can adjust the brightness level on my Panasonic camera LCD view finder.

(you can buy a little hood for SLRs to make it visible)

They quite possibly did then.

I notice about a 0.4 sec delay on my cheapo when it's on auto-timer.

Yes. I should have said that.
