Is that longer than on an SLR?

Ask the others- this is already in danger of going above my head!

It's so long since I used my SLRs I can't remember.

Mine was adjusted to the max. And the downside of doing
this is it runs the battery down even quicker.

I have no problem with digital cameras.

the problem is with compact cameras, film or otherwise.

There's none on mine. Now that you have reminded me, I did
find the shutter delay on the compact annoying.

I don't find this aspect of my DSLR annoying so it can't have one.

What kind of batteries were you using?

With my cheapo job, I can go through 180 pictures (average for each my
.5 gig memory cards) and view them, etc., always using the LCD viewer,
and still have plenty of battery power left for 2 rechargeable AA's.

Even with a bigger draining camera, I'd imagine that you could improve
the performance with battery type. FWIW, store-bought batteries are
usually useless- and will barely last more than 20 pics- even big
brands. Maybe someone can explain why? I just learned by experience...

I'm not aware of any.

I don't have a problem with battery life. Batteries have improved no end in
recent years.

The one it was supplied with.

Or put another way, the one that costs circa 32.00 GBP for a
new one and I wasn't spending that sort of money to find out if
it was better after I'd discovered how rubbish the zoom lens
was.

20 pictures!

Less than 500 between charges is CFU for me.

Which miniature digital camera was somebody using in the photographing Britain
program on BBC4 last Friday? It produced images with almost no distortion. The
camera was more less the same size as my camera's LCD view finder.

Oh, I'm a very experienced keen amateur, but seldom have occasion to
want to print really large versions of my work; I mostly make rather
elaborate albums of each trip, add some to my website version thereof,
and e-mail a few to friends. It took me a long time to convert to
digital, but I'm 73 and don't trust ANY airline not to lose checked
luggage given the opportunity.

Oh, I have a real camera with NO fancy automatic features, and as a
yearbook advisor for many years, was almost always the one to take the
action shots we ended up using, no matter how many photographers I
trained to use real cameras. I miss being able to shoot as instantly as
I can with a fast 35mm single lens camera, but carrying extra lenses and
a separate flash unit when flying is just too much for my purposes now.
Besides, I edit them on my computer when I get home, and NOT with that
silly iPhoto program that came with my new computer.

Oh, I'm not arguing that it is. But since the viewfinder shows less than
what I'm actually getting, if it's in there, it's in the shot 8-)
