Some airports allow both a purse and a carry-on. Not Heathrow.

We were with a group and some people went through Heathrow. With 2
families, there were many lost bags and one was never found. We were
going on a cruise and they arrived in Rome early. They spent every
evening spending 80 Euros every evening taking cabs to the Rome
airport to see any bags had been found.

That was completely unnecessary.

Don't they have phones in Rome?

Obviously you have never lost a bag, especially in Europe.

Otherwise you wouldn't be making this quite foolish statement.

I have.

They turn up the next day in a taxi, unless you fly BA, in which case they
turn up the enxt week in a taxi...

In Bombay they don't turn up, they don't deliver them in a taxi and if
you're lucky the luggage tag will turn up in a month so you can claim on
your insurance...

Or don't you have luggage insurance?

I have actually. I was kept well up to date with the location
of my bag by phoning the number that the airline supplied
me with.

You were lucky - your bag was simply delayed.

My experience is that the phone keeps ringing and in the rare event that
someone deigns to answer, they don't have a clue.

I don't pay for it.

And after they tried phoning with no success, they went to the airport
and went through the bags every evening.

They did fly BA but I'm not aware of taxis that work well at sea.

Some bags were located before they left, a couple turned up at
different ports and one never was located-at least not yet.

Some people however, actually hope to use the clothes and other items
that were packed with the expectation they would arrive.

A poster on Fodors recently mentioned going to Rome's FCO Airport to
see about his lost bag in person.

While there he saw a large pile of luggage just laying in the corner.
On his own without anyone's permission or knowledge he looked thru it
and guess what he found :-).

If it happened to me in Rome I would give them 1 day, a call the 2nd
day and the 3rd day I would take the cheap ?5 train to the airport and
pester them a bit in person.

Nobody who flies BA should ever expect any luggage to appear at the other
end.

If it does make it you can rejoice at your happy accident.

If it doesn't then I'm afraid it's 'business as usual'...

I believe something like 10% of BA passengers have their luggage go missing.
I can't understand why on earth anyone ever buys a ticket from them.

I've flown a few times to Athens with BA and had no problems with baggage
(nor, as far as I could see, did anyone else on the flights). The flights
were relatively pleasant, or at least not unpleasant like the occasional
charter-flight I have been misguided enough to take. The only real
alternative to Greece is EasyJet and frankly I would rather travel on the
back of a container lorry.

For the last two years I've taken to going by car. Much more relaxing and the
only person who can lose my baggage is me.

My attitude is basically if it won't fit in my carry-on, I either don't
need it at all or it had better be easily replaceable.

I've heard that expressed by others although I don't know how anyone
can go for a 3 week trip including a 12 day cruise with 2 formal
nights with only a carryon.
