Bye bye BBC

Peter, there are many out there wanting to take money NOW for internet based solutions.
You are right my view is, if you can wait then do so.
As an experiment we tried the BBC news on Filmon when in the Algarve two weeks ago.
The picture was Ok at best but definetly declined from around 6.00pm when the locals got back from work/school etc and switched on their comps.
We normally have a good internet connection having recently upgraded.

What part of anything i have suggested asks that you go to one of these rip off merchants. I have mentioned many times about my speed being only 0.85mbps that's less than 1meg of speed and while the TV is on i can still use the internet.
It's easy to find fault when you have such a negative view of Filmon. What is your answer for now?

Peter promotes Fimon on just about every forum there is and he is entitled to his opinion .
I will not get into a discussion about the merits /legality or otherwise of Filmon it all about the quality of internet Tv in Portugal and I do believe that it is really too early for anyone to recommend one service/provider over another.
I will also agree that if you are an expat in an area with few expats trying to access UK internet TV you may find the quality is better because of lower demand.
The simple fact are that a free service ( albeit the basic service ) will attract more demand than something you pay for with resultant disruption and poor quality at times of peak demand. A reduction in quality that others are already finding.

Just think before the days of TV we all found things to do like playing out with our mates, making dens, having cap gun fights etc.
Now this could be an opportunity to return to those salad days but with more adult persuits like dominos, wine making, wife swapping etc.

I know people do feel the loss of UK TV..and I do feel for the elderly and sick here and people who dont have Internet...I really feel for them. But we have SO much media now and it seems our whole life is seen through a screen. I have a drawer full of DVD's , many of which I haven't watched, four Portugese channels, endless podcasts, Internet radio and TV as long as I don't use it too often and use up my download entitlement, Facebook and forums, ordinary radio, endless music I could listen to, Kindle books galore.
My children bring me boxed sets every Christmas and birthday. I have never had a subscription or Freeview box here and Uk Tv is enjoyed as a treat...and I do enjoy it. But there are so many other things to explore. You could even watch the wood burner or the stars!

i wont get into a slanging match with peter even though we have had a few in the past but,the bit i think you are missing peter about the loss of satellite is ,that while you live alone and sit in front of your computer and watch or download to your hearts content, others have partners who have different tastes and will watch a soap on a second tv while hubby watches footie on the 50 inch plasma,or families who have children who will want to watch cbbs with dad while mum watches corrie, this can not happen with filmon,so pointing out to all that filmon is there prayers answered is not quite right.

I agree that getting UK TV over the internet is not as simple as getting it via satellite at the moment but it will get easier and better. Personally I believe that ALL TV in the future will be via the internet

Actually, it takes a particular satellite setup to supply more than 1 TV. You need [needed] multiple LNB and multiple tuners.
By comparison, with internet you just need to have enough muscle [bandwidth]. 2 low definition channels take less than 1 HD channel, and usually you can upgrade for a reasonable cost if it's important to you.
I think it's just a matter of getting used the the changeover; and probably buying some new hardware.

I,ve just had installed, the GA Fly Android 4.0 Box that works with both internet and what,s left on freeview satellite.
Internet Filmon, although watchable was pretty poor so I took out an HD subscription with them (9€ month). Not sat tv standard but noticably better.
The box also picks up XBMC (whatever that is !) with more channels than I will ever watch.
Seems the way to go in the meantime:

This has made me smile!!....suggest everyone re-reads all the posts and feels the sense of 'panic' evoked.....
Me too if truth be told...as I was in the middle of a really good drama series( a re-worked...Bouquet of Barbed Wire) when the whole thing went blank...
However a quick FaceTime with ED in the USA..and I could get everything back via my laptop and Filmon.com.....It isn't perfect..but it will do for now
Like EMR I am going to take the wait and see attitude...By the latest accounts the actions by the powers that be in the UK by reducing their satellite field..and thus cutting off...Norway.Finland,Sweden Denmark.Southern France.Spain,Italy and Portugal....has not only ticked off millions of ex-pat Brits...but millions of nationals as well...but the biggest ticked off group of all are the Advertisers---who apparently they also failed to inform or take into account....maybe where we have failed...money will talk..
I can't think of a more short sighted ludicrous act than this in modern times....done at the same time as the controller of BBC claims he wants to 'reach out and be the most important influence in the world'...ummmm put the plug back in then

Watch this space, I expect that in the not to distant future the BBC etc wil be launching subscription sites for their versions of I player that will be available world wide.
Not being live TV it does not break any laws and will carry adverts.
I suspect that the business and tech plans are being drawn up as we speak.
No dodgy Filmon picture quality or need for VPN etc.
One correction it was not the BBC etc that reduced the Sat footprint , it is a change in technology aimed at improving UK reception which is all the UK channels can legally provide.

Misunderstanding..on my part for not making it clearer EMR
Of course you are right ..but done in agreement with those different providers
who you might have thought would have given consideration to thinking outside the box' no pun intended
If it has all been done with the goal of making those outside the UK pay...then they could find themselves 'fishing behind the net' as others fleeter of foot get in before them... sorry couldn't get anymore puns in..a slow day
