I just use an HTML cable from PC to TV & then put the TV on HDMI1.

Interestingly, my TV also has a USB plug but when I connect my Samsung Tablet to that, it doesn't work.

Just connect your TV in to your Vga out on your computer and use menu on the TV and select Computer. When you get your computer screen displayed on the TV just search for Filon on of you go.

Ps no Dongle required

Been researching. Use "HDMI out" from computer to "HDMI in" on TV to get full HD in 1080p. The VGA is not HD at 1024.The "S-Video" is much lower.

The HDMI might not have sound so another cable must be inserted into "Audio Out" of the computer that splits into Left and Right jacks for the "Audio In" of the TV.

Then download the app from PlayStore to use your Android SmartPhone as a remote from your couch.

Just joined BE so been scouting through all the interesting threads particularly the loss of free UK TV and wholly agree with many that the loss is by no means the end of the world however nearly all the comments assume that we all live permanently in Portugal
We try visit our villa roughly every 6-8 weeks and in the summer TV does not enter our lives, however as pointed out by numerous people the winter can be a different story. It is not economical to install internet - due to the relative high costs against our usage - unless of course, someone can tell me otherwise!

I note that the last post was 7 months ago, so been technophobic I wondered if things have moved on as I hear on the rumour mill that people are now having installations with a one time cost of 350 euros which uses a military satellite??

Love the site by the way and look forward to some lively discussions!!

Hi

Here in Gois a couple of friends have changed from 1.5m to 1.8m dishs and now have no trouble getting UK TV but it was not cheap. All reports say from Coimbra north there is a chance with bigger dishs but south still have no reception.

We still use the services of Filmon.com here in the south Harrogate..Its not difficult.. just keep your computer charged whilst watching any programme..and buy an Apple TV box (100 euro's +-)..so that you can project them onto your TV screen...We do lose progs for seconds here and there sometimes..but it always rewinds back to where it broke off...

We are permanent residents so do like to watch regularly..this BBC faff has made little difference to us..We also watch excellent sport coverage on MEO(Golf) learn a bit of Portuguese at the sam time...

The Apple tv box is a bit pricey at €100. I got me a Metronic tv stick for €73 from Worten.
It works great as it has a HDMI cable and does not plug in directly into the tv.
This way, I can place the stick in front of the tv for better reception.

Many people make a mistake of buying a tv stick without first looking where the tv's HDMI port is. If it is on the side of the tv, then it does not matter if you get one without a cable as these sticks don't like all the radio, electrical and magnetic interference it has to look through. Never mind the tv itself if your router is in front of the tv.

I am just a bit peeved off that I did not get one with external antennas as I have to move the router closer from the center of my apartment.

If you are really desperate there are at least fifty channels still available, mainly rubbish but sky news is not too bad despite all the adverts

As you say the remaining channels are rubbish and watching a spool of repeated news on a winters evening is not what I had in mind.
From the replies so far it would appear installing expensive internet is the only answer which we will not be doing as I believe that in 1 or maybe even 2 years someone will come up with some sort of Freeview or subscription satellite TV for Europe as there is now a huge hole in the market - until then it looks like its DVD's and a my Kindle!!

Our phone line and internet access costs ~ 32,50€ per month. Is a worthwhile subscription satellite service going to be so much cheaper than that?

For what it's worth, we pay just under €60 per month for unlimited fibre optic internet, TV with umpteen mostly kak channels, 2 cellphone sim cards each with 600 free calls and 600 free sms messages every month and a landline phone with free calls to local PT numbers and free international calls from 2100 hours to 0900 hours.

They also offer a similar package with broadband instead of F/O but with 2000 minutes and sms messages per month for the same price.

Quite honestly, I reckon that's a pretty good deal...... hell, 3 years ago, we were paying the equivalent of €60 per month in South Africa just for satellite TV!

Axxess has now stopped subscriptions to their DNS/VPN thingy that changes ones location to get access to Netflix after Netflix warned them or face consequences in court.
I'm sure Hola and Media Link will be stopped soon as well.

Now we're getting somewhere - thanks for replying and both deals mentioned seem to be good ones. Been new to BE I presume you have not mentioned the companies due to it been against the rules but at least now we have a baseline to work from.

Will get out there and start bartering!!
